jjohnson241 Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Hi, Anyone help with the correct procedure to apply the magnetic brake? I've been having problems applying and re-applying the magnetic brake. What is the process to 1) apply the brake initially, and 2) reapply the brake after changing the position of the cyclic? Do you have to hit the reset trimmer button, either initially and/or before adjusting the cyclic and reapplying the brake? Thanks [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 3rd Mar Div RVN '66-'67
Rogue Trooper Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I have not used the magnetic Trim since the initial release of the gazelle, I quickly preferred holding the stick or holding the stick and fine trimming. I will try it next time I fly, but it should work the same as the other DCS choppers. Move and hold the stick to the desired position and trim. Because you have a self centring joystick you then need to quickly re-centre your actual stick but the virtual stick will stay where it was trimmed. It may even be possible that all other inputs on the joystick will be ignored until you re-centre your RL joystick. jjohnson241 Posted December 2, 2016 Author Posted December 2, 2016 Thanks. Any thoughts on what to do when you change position of the cyclic and want to trim that position? Do you reset trim first before moving to the new trim position? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 3rd Mar Div RVN '66-'67
nomdeplume Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Any thoughts on what to do when you change position of the cyclic and want to trim that position? Do you reset trim first before moving to the new trim position? Nope, you just press the trim button again. A real magnetic brake trim essentially just sets the 'centre' position of the cyclic each time it's pressed, i.e. adjusts the centring forces acting on the cyclic. AFAIK, in the Gazelle module Polychop have changed it a bit to specifically hold the helicopter's current attitude rather than the cyclic position, so if you're expecting the former it might feel like it's not working properly. See here for more details/discussion, most relevant part is probably this: So Pat decided to code a different system : Your TRIM will keep the current angle of the Gazelle itself, not the cyclic one. Obviously, modifying your horizontal or vertical speed will cause this angle to get modified, it's not a "cheat" option. So if like me you were pushing hard your cyclic forward, push on the TRIM and then bringing your physical joy centered as fast as possible, well, that's very simple, it won't work nice. Instead, simply place your Gazelle carefully at the angle you want to keep, and then push on the TRIM, and well, you can move back your physical joy centered, there won't be any "push forward shit", you're fine.
jjohnson241 Posted December 2, 2016 Author Posted December 2, 2016 Thanks but I read that entire thread and I'm confused to say the least. I'm going to search for a video on Magnetic Brake operation with a spring centered joystick. I doubt if I find one but thanks again for your help. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 3rd Mar Div RVN '66-'67
Rogue Trooper Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 No, don't use the trim reset unless you are confused where your virtual stick is. Best to think of 2 sticks: The virtual stick, what you see in your virtual pit, this works like the real thing. It does not self centre. Where you trim, the Virtual stick stays, this is the new trimmed position or you could say it has a new centre or new zero input point. Your real life joystick is self centering, as are most gaming joysticks. Its Zero input position is always the centre. Without trim both the real life and virtual sticks follow each other perfectly. If you push the RL joystick forward the virtual stick will also move forward and when you trim (one click) the virtual stick stays forward (new zero input position) and you must now centre your Real life joystick to its fixed centre position (zero input). yeah its confusing to explain as well as understand, the easiest thing to do is press the joystick position cheat "Right control enter" when you are next in the game, the diamond will always represent the virtual stick and where it is trimmed! jjohnson241 Posted December 3, 2016 Author Posted December 3, 2016 I played with the Magnetic Brake when I flew last and understand now how it works. What is most confusing is the apparent interchangeable use of the terms Trim and Magnetic Brake. I also fly the MI-8, Huey and KA-50, all of which use the term "Trim" for what is in the Gazelle "Magnetic Brake". The Gazelle is the only bird of that has two "Trim" systems. Tends to confuse the novice. Anyhow, appreciate your help. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 3rd Mar Div RVN '66-'67
Rogue Trooper Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 (edited) Ah ok you are quite experienced at this. so ignore my previous post. Once you get used to the fine trim, its very nice. ESAc_matador Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Ok, so the Gazelle Magnetic Break, is what you know as trim. Also, the Gazelle has a trim like aircrafts. That's it.
