I need to check for sources, but I am pretty sure that the mk IX had a safety function that disabled the guns on the ground. (Needed to be turned off for ground testing etc)

 

If you have a source, or whatever, please provide. I will look around as well. Thanks!

Will take a look. Might take some time though- reading through an extensive book series, called "Spitfire Saga" about the Norwegian 331 and 332 sqns (which flew mk IX's for extended period). Thousands of pages- but I'll see what I can find.
