Toten Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I have noticed when flying that when approaching the stall there seems to be a lot of banging noises coming from the Viggen. At first I thought I must have had my throttle to close to afterburner and that it was lighting but not the case. Any body know the cause? Grundar Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Compressor stall. Sounds like exactly what it is. It's a prelude for the F-14a where this will happen too, imagine how much more annoying it will be though when one of the two engines does it while the other powers on as normal :P
renhanxue Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 The engine is trying to tell you that if you keep doing what you're doing it's gonna ditch you and let you sort this whole "flying" thing out on your own really soon. (what grunf said - don't exceed 18° AoA if you like having thrust)
CrimsonGhost Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Yep. It's the air passing through the engine becoming unstable, and if allowed to continue, it can destroy the engine. Worst I ever saw in real life was a 727 (JT8D engine that the Viggen's RM8 is based on) that when cleared on to the runway, the crew went immediately to takeoff power, rather than letting the engine stabilize first. End result sounded like a bomb went off with visible pieces of what used to be the #2 engine coming out the back of the engine, and a very abrupt aborted takeoff. I recall that one taking a long time to taxi back to the gate. :) i7-7700K @ 5.2Ghz SLI 1080Ti 64GB GSkill Trident Z RGB 4133 Asus Maximus IX Extreme Custom Water Cooling Loop TM Warthog/ MFG Crosswind
Whuping Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Must be those sneaky lil' midgets banging around behind the Instrument Panel. Land when safe and notify your crew chief immediately. Alwandy Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Its compressor stall and they are nasty.. Did one at the sea level and oh boy restarting the engine wouldn't even work.. I was having tiny bit of thrust and slowly gliding into the sea!
