Hello all,

I am very interested in buying the oculus rift and jumping on the VR bandwagon.

But first I wonder if I should upgrade my PC or not and with what gear.

my current config is i5-2500K /AMD R9 290 /16gbDDR4

First of all, do you think this is enough to do DCS in VR ? I guess you will say it won't be optimal, but

I am asking because I wonder if it would be a god idea to maybe buy first the rift and then upgrade my PC, just to try it out before shelling out the money (Even though I am quite confident at this point that I will love it;) ).

Next, If I upgrade my config I can spare about 1000€(I live in belgium), so I plan to go for an i5-7600K/RX480. (Something like this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/B6kKd6)

Do you think this will be enough for decent Perf in VR ?

Should I rather go for a better CPU like I7-7700K and try to save money on the other components ?

Or rather try to get a 1070 ?

Thanks a lot for all your advices :joystick:

I'm still running an i7 2600k -overclocked to 4.8ghz

now on a 1080ti

my pc runs VR brill its fluid smooth experience,

if I were you overclock that i5 of yours (get a big cooler or even water block&fan)

so just spend the monies on that big gpu ( & perhaps fans to cool etc, but I'd go water cooling )

awaiting a block to watercool the gpu too as summer is coming and I dont want it throttling down then I'll overclock that too

happy days

PS remember benchmarks utilise all cpu cores, DCS & most other titles only use 1 to 2 cores and the sandy bridge performs great in single/duel core mode and overclocks extreamly well, most PC cases are terrible at cooling its very cheap/easy to cut a big hole in the side and mount a large extraction fan

I have a useable experience with the low end system (at least on the processor side) in my sig below.

I have all settings at lowest, and get from 45fps high up, as low as 15 or 20 down low. In most situations, it is still playable, and I haven't had many motion sickness issues.

Not optimal, but useable until I build a new PC in the next few months.

+1 Demon : get a bigger GPU and rather leave the i7 alone and get an i5.

Still, the i7 might get some more love down the road when more games adopt more cores etc..

The current i5 is a dead horse 1 year from now as AMD has shown the way to enable SMT/HT for EVERYBODY without an extra price tag.

Still, if you can only do either or, then get the i5 but the bigger GPU, no doubt !!!

16GB RAM + SSD is a good start too.
