Hi. I've just received Mig-21 and I'm trying to learn it by going thru the documentation. I've just noticed that the middle mode in ground clutter compensation works, by eliminating some radar reflection from the ground, but the top mode(where it tilts the radar by 1.5 degrees) doesn't help even a little bit.

 

I've tried this while flying on the deck and high above. It's the same as the middle position mode. I'd appreciate it if you could enlighten me on this functionality.

I found the same.

 

The middle position should apply some filtering and signal reduction. The low alt position I'm not sure if it physically tilts (RP-21 physically tilt but RP-22?) the entire pattern up or simply omits the lowest bar(s) of the scan pattern. In DCS I find no difference between the two modes.

It does make a significant difference, with the tilt applied, you can't see anything below the horizontal line of the HUD. Whereas with only filtering applied you can see them well below it.

It's messed up.

 

I did some testing and at 7km following a MiG-21 and the radar is not showing any targets below 1.5° nose position even if the target depression is not 1.5° below the horizon. The game is applying the both requirements that the target is not 1.5° below the nose and not 1.5° below the horizon. If the target fails either of these two requirements then it isn't displayed.

 

This is nonsense. If the target is 1° below the horizon but nose is 4° above horizon then it should be detected. The RP-22 radar scan pattern is horizon-stabilized in -8+25° (or is it +8-25°?) limits of pitch.

 

So knowing that the downlook limit is masked by the nose position issue we can make sure to test the downlook limits in the 3 filter modes keeping in mind that nose position matters (when it shouldn't). The low alt filter won't detect below +1.5° on nose (as opposed to -1.5° below nose on other modes) but will happily detect below horizon the same as the other filter modes.

 

In the most optimistic interpretation of the radar specifications you should be able to detect a target 3.5° below horizon while having the nose +25° pitch up. Provided if scan pattern would be stabilized to horizon (yes) at nose position +25 (not +8) and if beam splotch radius is 2° and if center (not lower limb) of bottom scan bar is -1.5°.
