Here is my current equipment.

PNY GeForce GTX 650 RGMGTX65N3H1FB+0TP 1GB Video Card

Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W BX80637I73770

ASRock Z77 Pro4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

CORSAIR Vengeance (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10

CORSAIR Vengeance LP (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model CML8GX3M1A1600C10B (NOT CURRENTLY USING BUT HAVE AVAILABLE)

I am currently in the process of getting a GTX 970

I will get this next year.

PNY GeForce GTX 1080 Ti DirectX 12 VCGGTX1080T11PB-CG2 11GB 352-Bit GDDR5X PCI Express 3.0 x16 Blower Edition Video Card

My question is....... is it even worth getting the 1080 with my current hardware or will it just bottleneck?

Is it going to be worth getting the GTX 970 for now? Should I install the other 16 gigs of RAM I have or will I even need it?

I need, I need, I need... What about my wants? QuickSilver original.

Your CPU will bottleneck the 1080Ti.

At your configuration best option will be an 1070.

I am supporting my affirmation from personal experience on two systems with 4770K and 6770K.

Benchmark results are sometime better on the 6770K with 1070 over 4770K with 1080. Overall performances are better on 6770/1070.

Both video cards have 8Gb of RAM.

One more issue I am having

Sometimes my computer will just freeze and lock up for a few minutes then release.

I have VMWare installed with a Windows 7 OS. I am using a 5 TB hard drive.

I am not sure if the issue is because the hard drive is not partitioned properly or because reading from both the "real PC" and virtual PC is causing a buffering issue.......

I also have AVAST free antivirus installed on both the real and virtual PC. Maybe that is causing an issue. I just don't know.

I do know it is annoying having my PC freeze up for sometimes up to 15 minutes.

If you have experience with virtualization I would love to hear from you.

Thank you. I would point out however, the 1080Ti I am considering is an 11 Gig card and the 970 is a 4 Gig card.

The CPU you suggested, I would have to get a new motherboard and RAM correct?

One last question.

How playable with DCS World be with a 4 GB card and 256 bit memory interface.

I am playing on a 40 inch 1080.

For 1080p resolution those 4Gb video ram would be enough. However i still strongly recomending to you the 1070 with 8Gb of video ram.

Of course an SSD is mandatory and you have to migrate to windows 10 as well. DCS badly needs an SSD because the ammount of textures to be loaded is prety high.

The configurations I was talking earlier were 2 different computers.. but with equivalent components. Both have ASUS gaming motherboards (same price category but different generation)

Forget about virtualization on a gaming PC... unless you want to play Tetris, Worms... etc....

Win10 knows to work better with an SSD than the win7 so that SSD life is prolongued. There are drivers optimizing SSD on win7 too... but not native with operating system.

This is not the only reason.... I am finding 10 much better optimized than 7, despite all voices that are afraid of privacy issues. I do not own any kind of state secrets... so I don't really care. Android users are even more exposed than Windows users :).

And of course, optimizations are usually done better on the latest version of software/drivers.

You can safely remain on Win7 but I really see no advantages on that... is just my personal view.

I see thanks! But I heard MS FFB2 sticks don't work with Win10 anymore? Or did I hear wrong? It would be a shame having to choose between FFB and SSD.

With Virtualization you need to run multiple HDDs and keep your VMs on a separate physical disk. No matter how many partitions you setup, you will have contention between your main OS and VMs if they are on the same physical disk. You also want to run as much RAM as possible for the same reason (contention for system resources). You should also set processor affinity to move your VMs to cores/threads 3-8 on your i7 as the first 2 cores are used by games.

A 4-8GB video card (970, 980, 980ti, 1070, Radeon 480/580/Fury) and an SSD will give you the most bang for your buck.

Thank you.

I have 2 comments just for clarity.

I use Windows 10 as my main OS and the VM has Windows 7.

I don't game from my VM, I only use it to surf the internet. I figured let a virus hit my virtual machine and keep my main OS safe. That was the idea anyway.

I hate to ask again but is running AVAST on my main computer and my VM causing an issue?

I would regret losing the ability to use my MSFFB2. Even though I am currently using a Saitek X-55 I find that stick difficult to fly Helicopters with. In fact I find it has too long of a throw. I have a G940 to but it is the biggest piece I have ever used. I am considering going back to the MS stick.

Thank you for the replies. They are appreciated.

As for the 8 GB card... I think I will do a 4 for now as even my 1 gig card will play DCS. I think next year I will just build a new PC.

It is possible your antivirus is causing resource contention with your virtual machine. See if you can white list the folder your vm sits in and exempt it from scanning to see if your performance issues go away.

If you only use the vm for surfing, pick up a copy of Sandboxie. This is a great app that virtualizes any app run inside it, isolating the app and any files written inside the sandbox from the rest of your OS. It is perfect for surfing and opening suspect files, and you won't need the resource consumption of a vm.
