Yeah, i can almost swear i've seen photos of pilots with the modified helmets somewhere, i just can't find them right now. Did the F-15 drivers get them as well??

F-15 HMD:

F-14 HMD:

This very early HMD/DASH helmet was used operationally in the late 70s early 80s on the US NAVY F-14's and MARINES Corps, F-4's. (Surplusagent)

During the 70s early 80s the Elbit Systems and Protection Inc. developed one of the first type of operational Helmet Mounted Displays (HMD's) based on a Gentex PRK-37 shell. This type of helmet was used operationally in the late 70s early 80s with the AIM-9L missile on the US NAVY F-14's and MARINES Corps F-4's to function as a helmet mounted targeting system between the pilot and the aircraft weapons system.

This helmet was intended to replace the VTAS and it utilises a magnetic tracker instead of the VTAS/IHADSS IR tracking nodules. This very first DASH helmet and the technology and lessons learned from this type of helmet mounted display system paved the way for such current fleet operational helmets like the US Air Force and Navy's JHMCS , TopSight , Agile Eye and the Israeli Air Force DASH.

Well... I really was giving time a chance...

But from time to time someone posts something about / related to the AIM-9 employment modes in the F-14A, so I really had to start this.

The pic below is my (speculative) take on the subject after a LOT of research from the first time I've opened a thread about this, and today.

Bear in mind that, my scheme focus more on :

- AIM-9 seeker-head behavior in the HUD (moving ; stopped; etc)

- actual seeker lock procedures ( CAGE / SEAM / etc)

Basically this is a Portuguese guy asking you if this stuff really worked like this, or not.

Everyone feel free to post your opinion on the matter.

Lunaticfringe, would really appreciate your opinion also.

Hello again,

Forgot to add, each asterisk symbol * at the diagram is a possible mode / function to fire the AIM-9.

Brand new video from the archive, at 7:00 they talk about the F-14's gun and show live fire followed by a hud recording, in which the tomcat engages an aeriel target. I believe that the hud is in the "1000-m gunsight lead" mode.

Hello again,

From the link below, (Fleet Defender at Youtube), one can see:

4:26 - Boresight SCAN, ( AIM-9 seeker scans about aircraft datum line )

6:28 - WCS / Radar SCAN, ( AIM-9 seeker scans about radar target diamond )

That's the modes / functions I try to elaborate in the previous scheme.

Everyone feel free to post your opinion.
