Ok its been a long time in coming. I have the case, watercooling gear and the PSU selected with some small annoyances. Before I complete the computer I need some information on what else Im going to need to finish it. Mostly the processor and the motherboard. I have the cooling gear selected but it might have to be changed to adjust to what type of mobo and cpu I get.

My choices are:

1. AMD FX-57 San Diego DFI motherboard

2. FX-62 AM2 architecture Asus motherboard

3. Any good chip that I might be able to afford on the budget, the budget being $500 or more depending on how much longer Im willing to save.

I want to stay single core with the FX-57 simply because my games are only able to run single core...and the -57 is currently $250 from newegg. Im not completely sure what the added benefits are with having a dual core processor. If anyone can give me the skinny on the benefits of dual core, Ill opt for the AM2 architecture or better if its worth keeping the upgrade. I dont intend on upgrading for a long time and my budget is strictly limited to 1000 tops all the way through. Debatable here as well is the Vista Im thinkin hard about getting. Any ideas are welcome.

Why not consider the Intel Core 2 Duo line?

Intel i7-8700K | Asus Maximus X Formula | Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4 3200MHz | Gainward Phoenix GTX1070 GLH | Samsung 960 EVO NVMe 1 x 250GB OS & 1 x 500GB Games | Corsair RM750x 750W | Corsair Carbide Air 540| Win10 | Dell 27" 1440p 60Hz | Custom water loop: CPU EK-Supremacy EVO, GPU EK-GTX JetStream - Acetal+Nickel & Backplate, Radiator EK-Coolstream PE 360, Pump & Res EK-XRES 140 Revo D5, Fans 3 x EK-Vardar 120mm & 2 x Corsair ML140 140mm

if i were you i would choose intel core 2 duo with ASUS motherboard

ofcourse you should see some tests of processors

anyway its gonna be good decision to buy dual-core cos in future progs will be optimized for that

if your going AMD way you can get Fx-70 and a the dual AMD CPU ASUS motherboard (only one avaiable). They are the only ones that can be upgraded to Octo-core (2 Quads) by mid this year and rumours are that it will kick a$$ under windows vista ultimate.

AMD's quad core solution curently is much cheaper than intel's. Prices here are Fx-70 about one third of an Intell quad core, and core duo extreme (2 core).

check reviews:

I would have to recommend the Core 2 Duo lot as well. I just think it's better value for your buck. Also, you'll be stuck with DDR if using an FX-57.

Anyhoo, check out the CPU chart on Toms Hardware guide. You can choose two processors and a benchmarking method, and it will give you a graph of the performance with comparisons to other CPUs

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.html

By the way, games and such may not utilise both cores at the moment, but setting the affinity of all your background programs (firewall, etc), and then setting the affinity of the game to the other core (im currently using procaff to do this with Lock On), apparently is supposed to see an increase in the performance of the game. Apparently..... :)

Hey hey hitman.... it's your lucky day... I love these questions.

Lets clear some confusion first... You said your options are two AMD chips which led me to think you have some DDR1 ram that you had to use for the build, but your listing AMD socket AM2 as a possibility which means you would need DDR2...

so my question is this... is your upgrade really encompassing a CPU, Motherboard, and RAM?

If it is then you simply must go Intel Core 2 Duo... if you don't I will hunt you down and kill your goldfish. I'll just leave it at that, anyone wants to come onto this page and give a credible counter argument for purchasing an AMD CPU at this time better let the effects of the peyote you're eating wear off first (and this is coming from a guy currently running an AMD Opteron 165.)

So... assuming that your buying a CPU, Motherboard and DDR2 Ram I would go for this set up.

CPU

Option 1 - Core 2 Duo E6300

Option 2 - Core 2 Duo E4300 ... this one is very very similar to the E6300 but it has a lower FSB so it will overclock better on a worse equipment, among other things.

DDR2 Ram (RAM prices compared to timing and speed differences are so close, I would go for fastest rated .... Im no memory expert though)

I would take a look at these in a 2 gigabyte set (206$ @ newegg) http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_platinum_dual_channel

Motherboard - Go for a socket 775 board with a 965 or 975 chipset, something thats been around for awhile and has bios revisions and physical board revisions... Some thing like these

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131045

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121059

So there you have it ... CPU for 200$, Ram for 206$, and motherboard for plus or minus 200$ and you're set for 2 years... way below your budget

About dual core vs single core, yes LockOn itself wont use both cores, but if you have a dual core chip your stick software, nor hyperlobby will be using the core lockon is using. Therein is the benefit. Plus think of day to day applications when you're multitasking (web browser, winamp, messenger service, etc etc etc...all at once,) thats where the dual cores come into there own as well.

Also, watercooling..sweet! Danger Den? Swiftech? a TEC cooler? a spray bottle? lol

As for vista... buy a copy of Windows XP that has an upgrade coupon to the type of Vista that you'll want (and as far as i know there are many types... MS is building for niches or something)

IM kind of limited on my budget for the processor. I cant exactly spend more than 900 total on the processor (now that I had a very good day today). Ill take a look at those prices on them processors. I was thinkin a TEC cooler, but my choices were going along with zalman.

Edit: I had no idea the fx-70 was that cheap!! Ill be looking more into this here shortly...along with the e6700 pentium. Id rather stick with AMD, but...itll be the upgrade thats gonna last me for a few years.

CPU and motherboard. Everything else is pre-selected. That ram you mentioned I might have to special order now cuz it looks enticing. I picked out corsair pc4000 for mine...
