FSX is a big improvement over FS2004, IMO. I reluctantly bought the upgrade despite knowing that it would struggle on my 4 year old system. With a few tweaks, it has been working surprisingly well at visually respectable low-medium display settings. The most pleasant change was the Bell 206 which now flies more realistically, particularly in hover. For those of us looking forward to Black Shark, this is the obvious first step to learn the basics of rotorcraft flight. To appreciate how realistic even MSFS is as a helicopter training tool, go to Hovercontrol.

having never flown anything more then a radio controlled chopper around a mates snooker room I'd say its pretty realistic :P

Haven't played it for awhile since buying it - not so keen on flying aircraft that easily succumb to overstressing personally - and whilst flying the helicopters is fun its nowhere near as fun as flying a helo in BF:Vietnam (which I'd say is a very good attempt at a flight model considering the plane flight model)

60 € aprox. (it worths every 1/1000 cent.) The best PC based helicopter simulation until BS release...and surprisingly enough it´s a FS2004 addon!, tough I´d better say FS2004 is only its graphical engine. Ladies and gentlemen: "Bell Jet Ranger II"

Well in Flight Simulator rotorhead world, there is only The Dodo, and Nemeth Brothers... and Jordan Moores Bell 412. Nothing else is worth a look.

You can't get better flight behavior, then Dodo's B206, and better look then Nemeth Brothers helos, for example, here's couple of shot I took of my repaint of Nemeth Designs S-76:

About the Dodo Advanced B206, it is amazing what those guys did with simple FS system, and they're still working on it making it even more realistic... man, I can't wait for the UH-1 (and they say it may not by the earliest model to be released)

Is FSX worth buying, then?

IMO FSX is worth buying soley for the improvement in the multiplayer arena. It is extremely well set up and 'most' of the time the communication is excellent.

The only thing lacking is the number of people in the rooms because people have been hesitant to take it up.

Also the challenges/missions/adventures are great fun aswell. HUGE improvement in adding this section.

Yes, FSX is worth it if you want medium-low settings. If you get Vista, however, with DX10, then it should have a much better time running. I'm looking to upgrade to vista simply because of FSX. Not for a year or so, when i finaly get new components for this crappy rig.

DCS Wishlist: 1) FIX THE DAMN RIVERS!!! 2) Spherical or cylindrical panorama view projection. 3) Enhanced input options (action upon button release, etc). 4) Aircraft flight parameter dump upon exit (stick posn, attitude, rates, accel, control volume, control-surface positions, SAS bias, etc). 5) ADS-33 maneuver courses as static objects. 6) Exposed API or exports of trim position and stick force for custom controllers. 7) Select auto multiple audio devices

Last time I visited HoverControl it was all written for FS9 - has that changed?

Is FSX worth buying, then?

Still the same. The last MSFS articles posted at HoverControl were written in July, 06. But the articles' stated benefits for using FS9 as a training aid for real Instructors and students hold even truer with FSX. FS9 was great, but at full realism settings it was too difficult to precisely control the helo and took a great deal of concentration to hover it in a confined area with precision. FSX has a more natural feel than FS9. Helicopters are inherently unstable but once you get the hover down they are not difficult to fly. With FSX you can now look wherever you like with TrackIR and not risk losing control. You can now view out the left side to approach an LZ with a slope or down through your feet to gauge drift and sink-rate. I found that with FS9 I had better look straight ahead near the horizon, otherwise my hovers would start to look pretty ugly:cry:. So yeah, for me FSX was well worth it--but then I'm content with anything over 10 FPS...
