Solid84 Posted February 18, 2018 Posted February 18, 2018 I'm usually fly over Vegas, to test different graphic setup, and using them as my personal benchmark on DCS, because it is the most demanding place for GPU (i think). I've a gtx 1080 and a 1440p@60hz monitor, and with my graphic setup, i've a solid 60fps even over Vegas, with Visibility Ultra, plenty of shadows and MSAA 2X, but only during daytime. When i try to fly at very dusk or even night, my fps drop dramatically to 30/40fps. And i don't understand why. Is dusk/night more demanding than daylight for GPUs? D.Va Posted February 18, 2018 Posted February 18, 2018 At dawn and dusk the game renders terrain object shadows. At night, I don't really know why performance is worse (is it?), but I guess it has to do with all the illumination around the city at night. I don't think lights create shadows in DCS, but there's probably something intense going on under the hood. Read my DCS 2.5 Optimisation Guide (version 2.5.4): https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3828073
Solid84 Posted February 18, 2018 Author Posted February 18, 2018 yes, even at night, with only city's illumination (very low in intensity) i have huge fps drop. Lixma 06 Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 It's the street lights. Try a Las Vegas flight at 6am - runs great. Now try a flight at 4am - fps tanks like a lead balloon. 2.2 wasn't like this.
Windsortheater Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 Bump. Can someone with the f18 and persian gulf alpha check night performance over dubai? Apparently night lighting is totally reworked on the gulf map. Sent from my SHIELD Tablet K1 using Tapatalk

Terrain renders shadows at ALL time of the day. There is a gap of 20 minutes at dusk and sunrise where the fps drops dramatically, specially with trees. It seems that the fact of tree "more enlarged" shadow projected on other trees could be the cause.
Gryzor Posted October 24, 2021 Posted October 24, 2021 I recover this thread. Please fix it, there is a HUGE fps reduction just in 20 minutes interval, due FLAT shadow objects enlargement at dusk-dawn times. Completely unplayable in VR, FPS goes down to 15 fps or so.
