So I’ve been flying here for 7 years pretty much exclusively. I make a lot of complex SP missions in the editor but I’ve never really dabbled in the weather system. Until yesterday. My god, what a difference!! 40 knot crosswind Harrier landings on base or ship!! The waves in 2.5 are cool, th feeling the the aircraft sideslipping feels totally realistic to me too. Well I’ll certainly be experimenting more with this. Just wish I had done before now. Just wish the pea soup fog wasn’t, well, pea soupy!

Cheers ED, my DCS experience has just multiplied several notches

The weather system is really not that great, although there has been some progress lately. Namely the dynamic weather generator can't be configured really in much any way at least from within the editor.

Wind should be configurable on many more altitudes and jetstreams should become a thing. Flying BVR with a 150kt headwind will make you think launch ranges a bit differently...

Also DCS clouds so far have really consisted of one type: the generic puff-cloud. it works in ether small quantities or as overcast, but you can't really do much with them. ED is working on new clouds apart from just textures, so I have high hopes for several cloud types.

Also clouds are desynced frequently in multiplayer and I'm not sure they even affect IR signatures of aircraft. And there are no turbulence effects when entering cumulus clouds... and actually no proper cumulus, towering cumulus or cumulonimbus clouds at all. Which reminds me of the DCS interpretation of a thunderstorm: overcast stratus layer (which will never produce electricity to constitute thunder) and lightning bolts flying left and right like it's doomsday. I would be all in for multi-cell or super-cell cumulonimbus'... and wait how long would it take for players to realize you should avoid those at all costs :D

On the positive side immersive effects such as the aforementioned waves and the "soon to be implemented" rain effects on the canopy as well as actual full fledged features like the new clouds and a better turbulence (I swear it has been improved lately - feels more lively in the current version) give room for higher hopes. Weather is such a huge part of flying regardless of aircraft that I'm eagerly waiting for improvements.

MMJ - for some time now the user has been able to set the wind speed and direction a 4 discrete altitudes.

Also, to Mr mojo 97, have you tried keeping the wind speed low, but winding the turbulence up to 60.

Then rather than constant winds, you get a 20km/h swirling gusty wind.

Turbulence at 60 makes carrier landings way more interesting :-)

Flying BVR with a 150kt headwind will make you think launch ranges a bit differently

If you're both in the same wind it doesn't make any difference. It's all about IAS, and you're both moving relative to the moving airmass,

Cheers.

Ok, thanks for the insight chaps. Clearly I don’t know much about weather patterns and the differing effects that the adjustments make. Can you recommend any new reading material Giving details on the weather functions and sliders in DCS?

Cheers

Alright, firstly, 4 altitudes for wind is in my opinion a good start, but not enough. I am very aware of the system limitations in that regard.

I wasn't quite clear on the jetstream example. The difference is indeed not that big if both of you reside in the exact same wind. Though jetstreams are quite local, meaning there will in most cases be variation between you and your opponent, especially if there is any altitude separation... + missiles loft, meaning if you shoot your missile from below a jetstream that increases speed to the missiles loft altitude for, say 50kt, that affects your missile performance. And if nothing else, a jetstream changes the dynamic of flying over AO areas in regards to SAM sites.

Wheather is very important in flight simulator. In DCS World it is a simple system, but I think ED Will implement better system, With rain in canopy, better and different clouds, effects. .. I hope they dont spend a lot time to implement it. :)

DCS Wishlist:

  • DCS: A-10C 2: new suite, flight and system improvements. fix no real things. To include new features. Some real love.

Yep. As I said, I am aware that it is a simple systel at the moment and I would like it be fixed/expanded upon. But I am also very positive that this is actually going to be expanded upon.

Exciting
