iVVChewy9141VVi Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 God i hate it So i got my new board the Maximus X Code and i said let me check it out it comes in a box with a plastic cover on it. I take the cover off to check it out then before i put the cover back on i blow it out with canned air. Now im all paranoid that i might have broke it or caused ESD even THOUGH i didn't physically touch the board :( some times i get this stupid ocd. I know the board did not get ESD since i never touched it i held the box part and looked at it then used air can to blow the dust that might have settled on it put the cover back on and put it back in its box. Im so silly
ED Team BIGNEWY Posted March 27, 2018 ED Team Posted March 27, 2018 It is pretty difficult to cause damage with ESD with modern boards I wouldnt worry to much Forum rules - DCS Crashing? iVVChewy9141VVi Posted March 27, 2018 Author Posted March 27, 2018 Thanks BigNewy its so stupid sometimes i lose it over stupid stuff. I mean when i build i am using the strap and all but just looking at the board lol A lot of stress going on
Johnny_Rico Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Electronics marked as ESD sensitive can be damaged pretty easily After all why would a manufacturer spend thousands per year protecting their products from it? I usually take a lot of precautions when dealing with electronics, it might not explode infront of you but it can cause latent damage that may result in failure later on I use a strap and also a modified cable to plug pc into wall (only earth connected - not live or neutral) when I am working inside it METAR weather for DCS World missions Guide to help out new DCS MOOSE Users -> HERE Havoc Company Dedicated server info Connect IP: 94.23.215.203 SRS enabled - freqs - Main = 243, A2A = 244, A2G = 245 Please contact me HERE if you have any server feedback or METAR issues/requests
Demon_ Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) As the trooper says,it's the nightmare  of any electronic manufacturing factories. I know, i was in one of them. You don't need to touch the board to damage him. Problems can occur instantly or later. The static jump like the thunderstorm. Walking on a carpet can generate 750v. Static electricity is caused by the triboelectric effect, in which certain materials become electrically charged (give or to take electrons) after they come into contact with a different material through friction. Static electricity runs rampant in dry environments, carpeted rooms, socks, and when interacting with multiple materials like socks on plastic tiles, polimer carpet, woolen clothes/carpet. Wikipedia: A human being is represented as a capacitor of 100 picofarads, charged to a voltage of 4000 to 35000 volts. But yes, today's motherboards are well designed to minimize the problem. Do we talk about a $260+ motherboard? Edited March 28, 2018 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Demon_ Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 The strap should be ground's connected, not 'only' connected to the case on your desk. Connect the psu (in the case, switch off) to the wall. AX1200i: Look (bottom left) at the green wire (ground), from the 120v connector to the frame of the psu. Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Demon_ Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) Connect the strap to the case is useless when the case is not connect to the ground. This is good  The strap is connected to the ground of the wall. Edited March 28, 2018 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.

I can assure you that your motherboard didn't get any damage. It's impossible to cause an ESD by simply blowing air on something. Canned air has always been used for this purpose: clean computer parts easily without causing ESDs. I know what you're feeling man. I have the same stupid ocd. It bugs me everytime I get something new of value, especially tech stuff. The known complexity and sensitivity of electronic parts certainly doesn't help us achieve a peaceful mind...
