Ian_L Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Good evening gents, In between campaign missions in the A-10, I was trying to practice my air to air skills in the fast battle planner. 1 vs 1 against AI at excellent. I'm in a Su-33 (I find the russian fast jets to be easier to learn than the F-15 systems). First I managed to win against all the russian jets, from mig-23 to su-27, in the first 1 or 2 engagements. Now I am by far not getting enough practice, so I thought that this was pretty good. Moving on to the US planes, I first take on the F-14.... So far in 4 engagements, I always get downed by the Phoenix. This guy can launch at such a range that when I am trying to run the missile out of energy, I always lose my SA and when I don't actually get downed by it, I am so defensive that his next shot gets me. Any tips?
Frostie Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 The Aim-54 gives off a highly visible trail so its not hard to miss, when you get one launched at you from range try to hold a notch oneway and maybe drop some chaff. If you don't manage to break its lock before its upon you then wait for it to be within a resonable proximity then reverse your notch by pulling hard over to the otherside. This should easily beat the missiles energy. By now you should have got a launch authorisation, and launched an ER which should help you put him on the defensive. You will probably have to beat another Phoenix but previous tactics should defeat that too. F-14 should be easily defeated now. This isn't a fool proof method but its worked for me against 2 F-14's a lot more times than it hasn't. "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. JonTex Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Ian, welcome to the BVR the advanced session. Sounds like you already know how to dodge his missles and then when you become low and slow he is killing you because your so far out of position. Roger that brotha we have all been there. Not sure what method your using but try this. When your about to engage him turn your nose 90 degrees to the right or left of his approach. This is called beaming the target. #1 this makes it harder for him to lock you and #2 it puts you in a position to drag his missles out to make them use up there energy ... add a split S to the end of the manuever just before the phoenix arrives and you should be able to dodge the missle change direction and pick up speed in the dive. This also makes it easy to know what direction your opponent is coming from. If he was on the left when you dodged the missles now he is on the right. Gain altitude and set up to do this again traveling the other way. Pay close attention to how close he is because once he is within range of your missles you want to lock him quickly and fire your R27 ER's. I would suggest keeping him 45 degrees to the right or left of your nose firing missles in 15 sec intervals matching his altitude until he dies. If you have to break your lock and he is close switch to vertical scan and try for an ET shot once you dodge his missles. I cant remember how close he has to be for an ET shot something like 25km or something. Lets just say rule of thumb if you can see his ugly mug he is probably in range. At this point in the fight stay low dump chaff and flares and try to get your nose on him for the ET shot. I say ET's because they are fire and forget with more range than a 73. This should give you more of a fighting chance but there are no tricks in the wide open sky. Only when the terrain permits can you try to out wit your opponent until you can bring him into your fight ... which is obviously closer in range. Try ducking behind some mountains or drag him into some Air defense .... SAMS, Shilkas .. stuff like that. This will distract him long enough for you to get your nose around on him and kill him. If all else fails ... RUN .... theres nothing wrong with living to fight another day.:D I hope this helps Im sure others here in the forums will tell you more than what I know so dont get discouraged keep at it bud. Aeroscout Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 I try to avoid engagements with F-14s for theat reason. The AIM-54 is a good missile. DCS Wishlist: 1) FIX THE DAMN RIVERS!!! 2) Spherical or cylindrical panorama view projection. 3) Enhanced input options (action upon button release, etc). 4) Aircraft flight parameter dump upon exit (stick posn, attitude, rates, accel, control volume, control-surface positions, SAS bias, etc). 5) ADS-33 maneuver courses as static objects. 6) Exposed API or exports of trim position and stick force for custom controllers. 7) Select auto multiple audio devices
Ice Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Frosties explanation is very good. This tactic works well against AIM120's as well. If you like, I have a good mission to practice the A-Pole here
Aeroscout Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Do you have that as a simple track? Ian_L Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 Thanks alot for all the info. I really appreciate your guys taking the time to educate me! I will try your tactics tonight and make tracks to share with you, that way you can all have a good laugh, and maybe I can learn a thing or two myself by rewatching my mistakes! Ian
Viper101 Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 The AIM-54 is a good missile. thank you :P and Ian, good luck and hope you learn how to escape the thing:smilewink: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Poopskadoop Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 I find evading the Phoenix to be easier than evading the AMRAAM, which is very easy to evade in the game.
