I lived in a smal island in next to the western coast of africa in 82-84. Its the Madeira Archipelago.

Works as a turistic atraction for older folks who come from all over europe for warm weather and

exoctic landscapes made out of sub tropical vegetation.

The Airport there is small, was even smaller back in 84, whenever we came to the mainland and got

back there (for Christmas holidays) our poor Boeing 737's would have to apply full brakes on weels touch down.

The runway was affectously nicknamed "The carrier" because it provided a show of consecutive airliners

landing and stoping in record tight spaces. Everyday there were dozens of people watching this from the road nearby.

The black platform is the expantion made since early 90's.

The airport was originaly only built on dirt on the first half to the right of the picture.

landigs WERE A SCARY RIDE back then :D

There has been one fatal accident there, in 1979 a 707 drove off the edge and ended up at sea.

Son of a..., I`ve seen a lot of crazy approaches and landings but some

of the shots in that video gave me a "pucker factor" .

@Pilotasso - Great view! That runway is around 2800 m, isn`t it. Still,

I`d put some friggin heavy barriers/barricades on both ends.

No. There are couple of crusty`s loitering around. I haven`t been to

Frugal`s in years - not ever registered there. Not much time for browsing.
