Just a quick test to see how long you've all been at this.. ;)

1. In which PC flight simulation are you most likely to hear yourself say "Tracking - looks like the lizard"?

2. In which PC flight simulation is there a quick start mission called 'Zulu Bandits'?

3. Where are you most likely to hear your weapons officer say "Switching to LoBall"?

4. Psion's flight simulation for the ZX spectrum was unique in which key navigation tool?

5. In which flight simulation are you most likely to be flying an aircraft with the call sign "Baron 9-Lima-Golf"?

6. Which Rowan simulation is one of the few flight simulations to also include a strategic campaign based on real world events?

7. IL2 was vulnerable to which engine management exploit?

8. The attatched image is a screengrab from which 1990 flight sim?

9. What was the first PC simulation to allow you to design your own aircraft with a GUI?

10. In which simulator can you make your co-pilot throw up if you fly outside the envelope?

Some of the answers may not be completely accurate - 'cos I've not had time or inclination to research them fully. I'll post them up later...

Lt. Commander Block: Every aerial photo and recon report indicate a defensive arsenal in the D, and perhaps negative C, categories. There's also some anti-aircraft squadrons.

Admiral Benson: I don't have a clue what you're talkin' about, Phil. Not a clue. I have a shell the size of a fist in my head. Pork Chop Hill. The only way I can make this toupee to stay on is by magnetizing the entire upper left quadrant of my skull, so you just go ahead and do what you do.

7. IL2 was vulnerable to which engine management exploit?

I flew IL-2 series from the time it was released for well over 3 years (the only thing I did not fly is latest IL-2 1946) and I've never hurd of any engine exploits  Are you possibly reffering to auto prop-pitch that some aircraft had in game but not real life?

PC specs:

Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR

There was actually a flaw in the engine management for the manual pitch aircraft that allowed an apparent boost in engine power if you rapidly twitched the prop pitch up and down - I think the effect was most noticable and commonly used on the Tempest.

You're doing well so far Poko - didn't think anybody would get the image question!

10. I know this one, had the game, just cannot remember which one is it ;)

With the price of ammunition these days do not expect a warning shot.

2. In which PC flight simulation is there a quick start mission called 'Zulu Bandits'?

F-29 Retaliator? It had one called Zulu alert

6. Which Rowan simulation is one of the few flight simulations to also include a strategic campaign based on real world events?

Flight of the Intruder

Ok I have a few quiz questions too (don't worry they're easy).

1. In which flight sim "At last you can really fly"?

2. In which flight sim for the 8-bits you flew a Mosquito?

3. In which flight sim for the 16bits the tower called you bluebird?

4. In which flight sim you had to qualify for the campaign by completing Intercept, Tank buster, Deepstrike and Recon first?

5. Which flight sim had a demo of an F-18 flying under the bridge of San Francisco?

God forgives... Spyros doesn't.

Hehe, I'll let you have this one - it's U.S. Navy fighters.. think it's one of Jane's.

F-29 Retaliator? It had one called Zulu alert

Absolutely right.. even if the question wasn't!

The answer to #1 is .... TFX. Also outstanding as the first sim I had where an inverted low altitude ejection resulted in a splattered pilot - now there's attention to detail.

I guess #4 is a bit more esoteric, one of the coders for Psion's flight sim for the speccy had a brain-fart while putting together the cockpit, and managed to invent the first compass with 361 degrees in it - went from 000 to 360, forgetting that they both refer to the same bearing.

Ad. 1 - Magic Carpet? :megalol:

But that'd make #3 'switching to fireball'...

Hehe, no, but it was a very famous sim in the mid 80s.(hint) The quote is from the advertisement and/or the box.

(hint 2) The Commodore 64 version had voice!

Ad. 2 - Ace of Aces (Im not sure)
Correct!

Ad. 3 - Eurofighter2000 or F-22 ADF?

No, try a late 80s sim

Ad. 4 - Combat Air Patrol?
No

Ad. 5 - Jet (by SubLogic)
Even though that's not the one I meant, you're right! I had a demo of jet on a Fred fish or 17bit diskette and it too shows the airplane flying under that bridge as far as I can remember. The one I had in mind was Interceptor though.

God forgives... Spyros doesn't.

Yeah!!! I thought it was the same. I also remember it as the Interceptor. You right.

... I remember that callsign. Wait-a-sec. Spyros! don't give the answer yet!

Hmm. Maybe something with F-16? Falcon 3.0 or Strike Commander

Come on! I'm sure you'll find it! :)

It's F-16 Combat Pilot by Digital Integration, so it has to do with the F-16 in deed

Woah.. I remembered that I'd seen those missions listed somewhere - but I'd completely forgotten I'd ever owned the game.. getting old...

1. In which flight sim "At last you can really fly"?

This one's driving me nutso though.. I know it, I know it...

Ok "At last you can really fly" was a quote from ACE and the callsign Bluebird is from Falcon (and the two expansion disks) by Spectrum Holobyte.

Hmm I didn't play any sims in the 90s with a couple of exceptions. I went straight from the 80s to Lockon! :)

3 games with the Mig-21! I want them I need them!:D

I only had the 21 as a rival on Falcon 1. Always wanted to "fly" it in a sim.

P.S. Wait I remembered one! Dogfight by Microprose, which had a Mig-21 vs Phantom scenario.

God forgives... Spyros doesn't.

Aww.. I thought that and then thought, nahhh - can't be, no-one else in the world will ever have played that! Had it on the spectrum, so no speech for me, but still special in being the second flight sim I ever played.

Hehe. Remember the notorious Lenslok protection on the Speccy?

No point in responding to this thread. Whoops, my bad!

Why not? Are regression to childhood threads that bad? :D

As age encroaches, dispute looks less and less attractive and reminiscence begins to gain a certain charm.. partly because during dispute you have to maintain a train of thought right to the end, but while undergoing misty-eyed reruns of the past you can just say 'remember xxxx... that was a xxxx that we'll never see again. I recall xxxx it late one xxxx....... So how's the wife?'.

I think this thread could be more a "they'll never be dead, as long as their name is spoken" sort of thing rather than a focused evaluation of their merits and complete lack of advanced weapons flight model - that's why it's marked OT. :smilewink:

"crash and burn commander"! ;)

I remember the way that all three MFD's sprung up with EJECT in bright red lettering.. and that damn siren cunningly recreated in 8-bit sound or PC speaker glory - it really made you want to punch out fast.

Think retaliator must have been the first time I heard the AIM9 growler.

Remember the notorious Lenslok protection on the Speccy?

Do I ever.. that and speedloader. Even the slightest humidity got on the tape and it'd never load again - back to shop, buy new copy. See, and these young folks thing they've got a problem with SF. :music_whistling:

Wow! I guess that didn't go over well either.

Yes it did, merely a light hearted dig!

3. Where are you most likely to hear your weapons officer say "Switching to LoBall"?

Was thinking team Apache, but Longbow et al accepted. :smilewink:

4. Psion's flight simulation for the ZX spectrum was unique in which key navigation tool?

361 degree compass

5. In which flight simulation are you most likely to be flying an aircraft with the call sign "Baron 9-Lima-Golf"?

3 games from 90's with MiG-21:

- Dogfight (Microprose) - good job Spyros!

- Jet Pilot (Vulcan Software) - This one was a true sim in that time. Marvelous but only on Amiga

- Chuck Yeager's Air Combat (EA)
