My indicated bearing in my HUD is always ~7 degrees left of what my radar page shows and the true bearing in the map/f2 menu etc. Not sure if this is a bug, but for precise navigation it does bring you slightly off course when following the HUD. I didn't see anyone else post this, but who knows, maybe it got past everyone.

This is called "gyro drift". It also happens in real life, that's why instead of 1 waypoint straight to a destination, you have a lot of them depending on the distance between points A and B. You can also "update" your position by updating coordinates. If you fly Mirage-2000 you should know that, if not, I hope my answer is clear enough :).

Slider, what you're thinking of is positional drift, which does occur with inertial systems (though the rate is dependent on the quality of INS and the fidelity of its alignment). Heading drift is minimal and generally averages itself out, so an inertial heading can normally be taken to the bank. Of course, the INS calculates its heading based on True North (this is part of its alignment), and any magnetic heading from an inertial source is merely Magvar from the INS database (based on present position) applied to the true heading.

I haven't played around with it myself (though I have noticed the difference in heading between the HUD and radar), but I have a feeling the difference is simply the Magvar and the HUD is showing a magnetic heading vice true.

Radar screen shows true heading.

HUD and HSI shows magnetic heading by default, but can be set to true in the data->AC page.

I'm assuming that the reason the radar page always shows true, is to better coordinate with other units/awacs.

Thanks for the correction Home Fries, without unnecessary roast as it likes to happen… I got a bit bamboozled as in Mirage special options you can disable INS alignment and mentioned earlier gyro drift. IIRC in Mirage it's also 7 degrees off.
