Nealius Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Are there any known weight limits for conventional landing in the Harrier? Today I tried CTO and CL on a clean jet and things went fine until I tried landing. I used the VMAT-203 training syllabus procedures to the best of my memory: CTO -- Nozzles 10° Flaps AUTO, rotate 120kts, wheels left the pavement at 136kts. CL -- Nozzles 0° Flaps AUTO, maintain 8-10 units AoA, touchdown at 156kts with maybe -100fps vertical velocity (VV was about -0.5° to -1° in the HUD on touchdown). AoA was 10.X units when the rubber hit the pavement. The left outrigger tire promptly blew, and by "blew" I meant that half the tire sunk into the ground and the aircraft behaved like I had a blown tire. Now, the manual says that you should touch down at less than 180kts. Which I did. So I'm not sure why my tire blew. I was flying a clean jet, with about 6800lbs of fuel on board, so I'm wondering if that was too heavy? Indeed, I needed 100% RPM to stabilize my descent rate on the base turn to final. But I don't recall a weight limit being listed in the manuals for CL. Is there something I'm missing?
baltic_dragon Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 Don’t think there are restrictions for weight, but do remember that CL is rather an emergency type of landing for the Harrier. Also do not use wheel brakes unless you have some problems with the nozzles - you should use them to slow down. have you tried the CL training mission that’s already included with the module? Nealius Posted October 3, 2018 Author Posted October 3, 2018 I haven't tried the training mission, but I've been doing it by the VMAT-203 procedures. PNB with 70% RPM on touchdown, after waiting for speeds to drop below 120kts so I don't go airborne again. I don't touch the wheel brakes until under 30kts.
baltic_dragon Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 Yeah, the training uses the same ones - try it though, you might find some additional interesting stuff!
