FZG_Immel Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 (edited) Why we don't do A-G ops? We don't have the weapons for it. At least not for the Hornet and Tiger, which is now out of ammo anyway. it's a budget question. we don't have enough airframes and budget to train pilots on both AA and AG mission. it was decided to not use the Hornets in that role Edited December 20, 2018 by FZG_Immel [sIGPIC]https://forums.eagle.ru/signaturepics/sigpic70550_3.gif[/sIGPIC] Asus Z390-H - SSD M.2 EVO 970 - Intel I9 @5.0ghz - 32gb DDR4 4000 - EVGA 3090 - Cougar FSSB + Virpil WRBRD + Hornet Stick - Thrustmaster TPR Pedal + WinWing MIP + Orion + TO and CO pannels - Track IR5
FZG_Immel Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 2. Why the Hornet was chosen over the Viper: Both types were seen as very capable, but the hornet fitted the Swiss Idea of an alpine Fighter better. Because as a Carrier Aircraft the Hornet had a stronger landing gear and with its two engines more thrust. So it would be more handy to use on alpine Air Bases, which are quite difficult to land on. On top, Boeing was ready to integrate the AIM-120 into Swiss Hornets, while Lockheed just wanted to sell Sparrows. In the end the evaluation committee stated that a fleet of Hornets would cost 15% more than a Viper fleet, but Hornets would be 30% more effective to operate. some of our airfield approaches don't match the typical Viper glideslope. Figaro9 Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 The Super Hornet is only an extra 5 feet in width with the wings folded. If the Swiss caverns don't have an extra two and a half feet of clearance for the Super Hornets folded wings on both sides of the aircraft, I fail to see how the F/A-18C/D fits in the caverns in the first place A bus is only 2 feet larger in width compared to your car but still you can not park it in your garage, can`t you? It is a fact, rhino is too big for cavern. The Hornet was too big for the existing caverns for Tigers and mirages in the 90. It took 4 years to enlarge one of them... and get ready again.
Figaro9 Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 This link is a good read on the F18 evaluation.... its in german and french though... https://www.vtg.admin.ch/content/vtg-internet/de/media/publikationen/luftwaffe.download/vtg-internet/de/publications/verwaltung/organisation/lw/buecher/80_112-BiG-Schriftenreihe-No66.pdf Swiss chose the f18 mainly over the m2000 and f16 for following reasons: -Better radar with less ground clutter, which is important in the alpine environment -far better sa and navigation system -better cockpit layout -less customize costs to adapt on existing systems -two engines (the f5 suffered surprisingly high rates of engine failures) -better and stronger structure -easier maintenance (for non professional soldiers in 3week a year service) -greater update-potential -long term: ground attach potential when the f5 would be replaced... The f16 in the tested version was initially struggling with the 11 degrees glide slope on the alpine airfields. This was solved latter. The mig 29 had structural issues, inferior systems and was not easy to adapt...
