Wild.Bill.Kelso Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I have a Dell 8250 with an ATI 9500pro/9700 128meg graphics card that has been going flaky on me for a few months now. This card requires a power connect to a 300watt power supply. The Dell 8250 comes with a 250watt power supply from what I read on the Dell Forums. They said it was 250watts average - 300watts max. Also, my system specs say I have AGP and PCI. My Device manager says the 9700 is in the 'PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0' slot. Is that the AGP slot? I just want to get a good graphics card that will get me by for the next year or so for about $150 or less. But I don't want to change my power supply. So, what's the best way to find a card that uses less than 300watts? Or can you give me some recommendations?
Jester_159th Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 You may be out of luck. Many years back when I bought the 9800Pro I've got now I had to make sure I had a 450w PSU fitted in my PC for it to run. I'm not aware of any newer cards that will run properly on a 250/300w PSU. I'd suggest you try checking sites like Toms Hardware or the like though to check things out for yourself. Unfortunately I haven't got any links handy.
ZoomBoy27 Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I picked up a ATI X1600Pro AGP and it's currently $160CDN at Future/Shop/Best Buy I wondered about my power supply(300W) but I've had no problems. I tend to fly 1280x1024 - 4xAA;8xAF - some heat generated but I chose an extra big fan for my CPU box. Some 350w are better than 400 or 500 depending on company. I have the same card a run on an Aopen 350watt PSU. No problems, very stable heat around 48-53 with a 120mm case fan. That's with Lockon. Falcon around same. Only two I use and for everything else the heat range is down to 38c to a low of 32c. during summer hot days it will probably rise higher so I put an ordinary fan in front an let it blow the air around and it keeps it well within the heat range. Lockon looks to be the same settings as mine that you have posted. Falcon I run 6xaa and 16xaf and opengl instead of dx. Hope this sheads some lite. Cheers.
Jester_159th Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I stand corrected. Sorry Wild Bill. :poster_oops:
