Cobrahjh Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 (edited) Howdy DCS family, I'm wondering which of the two I should go for: Dell Alienware 34" with G-Sync or a good VR set? Just not sure about the VR as my current framerate is around 60's-120 with max graphics. Doesn't VR cut your frame in half? How about not seeing your control? I have my doubts about that. Let's keep flying! :pilotfly: Specs: AMD Ryzen 1700x 3.8GHz, 32GB DDR4 3000MHz, 500GB NVME SSD, EVGA 1080 SC graphics card, warthog joystick, CH rudder pedals, Gigabyte AX370 Gaming k7 v.1 MB, Win 10 x64 Pro Edited December 26, 2018 by Cobrahjh System Specs
hansangb Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Hard to say. You need to post your HW specs. The answer will depend largely on what HW you have. CPU, GPU, amount of memory, Mag HD or SSD, what joysticks you have etc. hsb HW Spec in Spoiler --- i7-10700K Direct-To-Die/OC'ed to 5.1GHz, MSI Z490 MB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3, NVMe+SSD, Win 10 x64 Pro, MFG, Warthog, TM MFDs, Komodo Huey set, Rverbe G1

However, there is a thread by Kegetys who created a VR mod that removes the stuff you can't see from being rendered. This gives a good boost to people without top of the line specs from a few ears ago. I'm by no means saying your rig is not up to stuff. But the sad (good?) fact is that every year brings about one or two new levels of HW. As for seeing the dials, you can see most of them pretty clearly. And there's always a quick VR zoom, if need be. The biggest killer of FPS is shadows. So if you can live wi/o it, you should be fine with VR. As a frame of reference, I have the Predator 34" and I *NEVER* fly DCS on it. I used to use it just to setup options, but I don't even do that anymore. Were I a mission builder, the 34" would make all the sense. But since I don't, I have no use for the 34" for DCS. Watch C.W. Lemoine's Mover's FA18 video posted on YT on Dec 21st. I created a thread here for it. Or you can just look for it. While the visuals are not "through the lens" you'll get a perspective from aviators who flew the real F/A-18's. DeltaMike Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 Not everybody thinks 4k is best for DCS. I have both (Oculus and 4k) and way prefer Oculus. Tend to run monitor at 1080 anyway. Long as you can keep FR over 45 VR is fine, although you're trading detail for immersion any way you cut it. That said you have plenty of horsepower for VR. I'd oc the CPU Ryzen 5600X (stock), GBX570, 32Gb RAM, AMD 6900XT (reference), G2, WInwing Orion HOTAS, T-flight rudder
crab Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 It's love/hate for me in regards to VR; hate the loss of resolution, love being "in the cockpit" as it's often described. That said I have to agree with others who've said that can't go back to 2D, it died for me about 20 seconds after entering the virtual cockpit.
Deft Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 (edited) I’ve got. 38” ultra wide and an odyssey+ Offline I play on the odyssey. Multiplayer I use my monitor. VR is just to much of a disadvantage imultiplayer. There's also the consideration of what else you might be using the display for. If you play other non VR games or do work on your PC a big ultrawide monitor is awful nice and more useful than a VR headset. Edited December 30, 2018 by Deft
