Yes this is related to what level of shadows you are using - split distances for cockpit's shadows cast are changing between the different shadows settings low-medium-high.

different layers cast at different distances and the second layer, for "split distance in cockpit", is high resolution cockpit shadow cast but without pilot, third layer is with pilot and lower resolution.

I use a modded file shadows.lua and I've set this distance peculary to avoid this effect you see (see pictures) In fact I use the "high" setting shadowmap with custom split distances (outside much higher because external views are soft for the pc, and moderate in cockpit to have nice sharp shadows and surrounding other shadows, but not to far for trees and far scenery buildings) - to have quality but not overloading shadow setting.

If you want you can try this setting (it's IC ok from my pov, I apply moddified shadows.lua via jsgme) - I put it on "low" for all maps and keep medium and high genuine :

{ --low

3072, -- size of shadowmap

{0.02, 20.0, 100.0, 250.0, 1000.0, 6000}, -- split distances outside

{0.02, 1.5, 15.0, 100.0, 150.0, 1500} -- split distances in cockpit

Thanks for the info.

I suspected it was LOD related (the boundary where the shadow becomes less crisp is where the head is revealed) but I thought it was part of the aircraft's 3D model.

I've tried editing the Shadows.lua previously to tidy up the in-cockpit shadows but it wouldn't pass the IC.
