directorguy7 Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Does anyone know the startup procedure to turn on the HMD. When I start in the air it's good. But from ramp I can't get it to turn on. I tried changing the brightness thinking it was like the HUD where that turns it on but didn't work. Is there a switch I have to hit first? Second question is around AoA NUMBER on the HUD. With gear down and hook ready I can see the E bracket but the AoA number seems to stop displaying if E goes below horizon. Again cold start, so do I need to switch something else in to make AoA number work? Note with gear up the AoA displays just fine just obviously no E bracket.
Darcwaynard Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Not sure re: hmd The E bracket exists so that you dont need to reference an AoA number. Therefore if you are on speed the number is removed to reduce clutter. AoA is displayed if gear is up or if gear is down and not on speed. I've never had to do anything other than turn it on with the knob by the SPIN switch. I cold start almost every time.

I will have to check but I dont think this is correct in the carrier landing training mission, I remember it showing all the time I thought.

By this you mean from a cold start, once you have power running to everything you just spin the brightness on the knob to the right to brighter correct? Thats what I do. Weird.
Holden McGroyne Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Turning the HMD on is for me as simple as ensuring I have started the airframe fully and turning the HMD brightness knob. As for the AOA, with gear and flaps down, when you get the AOA over a certain value and the E bracket shows up, you don't need to know the number, you reference the E bracket, if the VV is in the middle of the E bracket, you are at 8.1.

Pretty sure its legit. I always remember it disappearing once your VV is within the E bracket. You have AoA on speed indicator and an E bracket to reference. Plus an LSO watching your AoA and calling corrections. No need for the numbers at this point. Check the manual as well you'll see images confirming this. AoA should disappear ones you are within the E bracket. If you want to see your AoA number, set a DDI to the FCS page. You will see you AoA per wing at the bottom left and right of the DDI. directorguy7 Posted January 26, 2019 Author Posted January 26, 2019 Thanks everyone this makes sense for the AoA. As for the HMD I will have to play around. I am sure I'm doing it right. Both engineers started. Battery on. All screens and HUD on. Fcs bit check complete. Not sure what I'm missing.

All you have to do his turn the HMD knob up and it comes on. Nothing special. If you have any mods enabled turn them off and if all else fails repair dcs.
