Cowboy10uk Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) Hi guys, I’m currently reading a book Before Topgun Days, which is about RIO training on the F14. It’s a spectacular read, although I can’t help but think, how on Earth are WE sim Rios going to learn the AWG9 correctly. It sounds such a complex piece of kit that requires a lot of knowledge and Mathematical ability to use correctly, that I can’t help but feel that many of us may be out of our depth trying to learn it, not to mention learning all the standard startup checks and routine flight systems that we will need to memorise. Does anyone know of any training materials avalible that might help us learn these systems. I’ve already downloaded the Natops and pocket checklist for the F14, so I’m reading those and taking notes, which will assist in memorising the checklists but I think learning the AWG9 is gonna be in another league. Obviously time spent on the sim itself will help, but sadly I’m rather restricted in the time I can actually fly, so I’m looking for a way to do it on a tablet while I have a free moment at work or when I’m looking after my daughter downstairs. If Heatblur are watching, a IPad AWG9 Training app would work well guys, hint hint. ;) Am I the only one concerned about how I’m gonna learn this new radar so I can be a effective Rio? OnlyforDCS Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 No you are not the only one. :) I was wondering myself too. I hope we get some interactive training missions to at least get the basics down, though Heatblur have been keeping mum on how these will work exactly. Who flies the plane while you train with the radar? Im sure some enterprising people will put up wonderful training videos once the module hits EA, but I feel it's still going to be a lot of trial and error. Flamin_Squirrel Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Who flies the plane while you train with the radar? Iceman does! That's HB's standin pilot when you're in the back seat. I don't think we've had any details; I'm expecting it to basically be a simple heading/altitude hold, which will probably be perfectly suitable while we're playing with the radar.
Top Jockey Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) Regarding the famous AN/AWG-9, by the impressions I got from Aerosoft's F-14X for FSX (the most accurate F-14 sim I've known so far), it didn't seem much complicated or hard to understand. Sure not all the capabilities were featured there, and still the Radar did have a considerable number of available modes / functions, but I didn't found it that hard to use. edit: I'll admit the RIO's Detailed Data Display itself, might need a little attention at first to understand, as it does display "raw" data, but other than that, things do have a reasonable working logic. Emmy Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I’d suggest a couple of semesters at Hogwarts. I’ve read that the best RIOs were part Wizard. OnlyforDCS Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 :smilewink:You want a simulator for a simulator? I realize a lot of the fun is in learning all the things by yourself, but to some people trial and error of this sort borders on masochism. You're right this is a sim. It's also a game. Which means it should be fun, and a lot of us have dayjobs, lives, etc. and can't afford to dedicate hours and hours of our lives studying up to eventually arrive at a point where we can be reasonably confident we can jump into someone's back seat and not ruin their (and our) experience and not have any fun at all... Let me put it this way. In flight school you had an instructor right? Well we're not asking for one here exactly, just something to make it a little easier for us to learn and to have fun doing so.
