monotwix Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 There is some birds I've made: They're animated and estimated number of 10.000, 34 polys each. The idea behind this is: well it's there, although still on it's early stage and it works with the port-crane animation (30 seconds of realistic cycle) which I had to remodel to avoid replacement of the object, so what I wonted to do was to scatter them in small groups of 10 and retain it's visibility and collisions with birds are possible as well which I haven't done yet due to it's early stage. Next thing to mention is some thing about lights on the hangar and other stuff if only Chiz and/or other guys would kindly show us how it's done. And so far i figured how to make a light source to be visible but to illuminate an area it seems to be another matter. I just wont to add to this saying that any help is appreciated for the sake of fun amen!:huh: 1 I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.

The very first version was a replacement for a truck where the civ trafic option in graphics menue was to have it on or off and than the crane time animation has made it better. A scene file is also there to play with and to make it good if you wont to... just let me know. I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.
Alfa Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 monotwix, I tried it and I am impressed! :) The bird animation(wing motion) is superb and also the movement of the birds in relation to each other looks very natural. However, there is a noticable performance hit when flying(player aircraft) close to the crane object......perhaps cutting down a little on the amount of birds would help. But of course the densly populated surroundings in which the crane objects are situated and also the number of cranes present in close proximity have something to do with this as well. I was thinking instead of the harbour crane, it might be better to build a trawler boat with the birds(seaguls) around/behind it. One of the currently inactive Flanker ship entries could be used for the purpose and then assign the bird animation to the argument for radar rotation(because it is a continious motion)......are the motions(traverse and boom elevation) of the sea crane obtained via a single argument? With such a trawler object you could control the performance impact both by the number of trawlers you put in a mission and by the position of them - i.e. if you don't mind the performance hit and want birds by a crane, you could just place a trawler next to it in the harbour, while placing the trawler further out at sea would mean retaining the effect, but in a less demanding environment performance wise. Anyway, just an idea :) . JJ

Not instead of a trawler Vekkinho, but a combined trawler/birds object - that's how monotwix made his mod(crane/birds object) and how you can get the animation of their flight to work - i.e. by animating it under the same argument that activates the movements of the crane :) . The problem is that you need to find someting to attach the birds to in order for it to work and there aren't many options available when it comes to fixed map objects with an active element to them - apart from the crane, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is the airfield radar(along side the runways). Moreover, if you replace such an object with one including birds in flight, you will get it everywhere on the map where the scene(*.scn) files assign it.....which could be in hundreds of places(hence difficult to control the performance hit). Anyway, I am afraid we are getting dangerously close to hijacking Tomcatz's thread - sorry about that :blush: - JJ. JJ

Yes I think I will carry on with that idea for making birds and I like the idea my self, but as it goes: It is the performance case we must think of as well as the ideas for the artistic and performance stuff that don't go hand in hand. The LOD implementation would help in this case to reduce the moving polys from a distance instad of minimising the number of birds as well as DDS texture, might just make it workable. Here it is I'm asking about the LODs or to be correct: how do you export the LOD models into .lom for them to work. Magic tools are good and thay work best in practice and it's one of those things...:) The question is not direced to alfa strait forwardly, thather than to those who would like to help.
