Wicked.- Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 Since PG theatre came out I started noticing a line that went from one side of the screen in my Rift CV1 to the other, halfway down from the top. I wasn't sure what was causing it but it wasn't enough of an issue to make me take time away from flying to fix it. With the near release date of several new HMD's I decided I was going to upgrade my Rift and most likely get the Index. Knowing this, I bought the EVGA RTX2080Ti XC Gamer to replace what I thought might be a faulty Zotac Amp Extreme GTX1080Ti. After installing the RTX I immediately fired up DCS for some online testing. The first thing I looked for was the line.... it was still there. The next thing I tried was upping the graphics a bit, mainly raising the IPD to 2.0 from 1.8. Everything else I left the same. There was zero performance increase. Meaning the GTX had the same performance as the RTX. So, my question is: is there ANY reason to upgrade to the RTX from my GTX knowing that there isn't anything wrong with the GTX and, I only use this rig for DCS? I have no need at the moment or near future for ray tracing unless it's in the next DCS update. Marklar Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 You are limited by CPU, that's why you didn't see any improvement after GPU upgrade. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk i9 13900K; RTX 4090, 64GB RAM. Reverb G2; VPC MongoosT-50CM3, VPC WarBRD Base with VPC Constellation ALPHA stick, MFG Crosswind V3
Wicked.- Posted May 24, 2019 Author Posted May 24, 2019 I agree bumping up to an i9 9900k would make a noticeable difference. I don't however think the 2080ti would make enough of a difference even then to justify the cost. But you've helped me make up my mind which is the best upgrade for the cash and that's a new CPU and mobo. My Zotac is clocked at 1900 something stock, whereas the EVGA is 1600 something. So, other than new technology for Vulcan (which I won't use) there's no benefit that I can see. I just thought that at $1250 for a new video card I would see a considerable amount of improvement in settings. Thank god for the 14 day return policy.. SneakyBastd Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 You have a 7700K. Just overclock it. You should be basically guaranteed to hit 4.8, and probably will reach 5ghz. A 9900K is just a very expensive upgrade for extra cores - which DCS cannot use. 7700K@5Ghz, 32GB 3600 CL16, 3080.
Harlikwin Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 Yeah, but its not GHZ... 9900k has better cache, memory management, bandwidth etc. Its not just clock speed. New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. maxsin72 Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 You are limited by CPU, that's why you didn't see any improvement after GPU upgrade. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk He can test performance with low graphic settings: if the frame rate don't increase this will means he is cpu limited. With a 7700k i don't think he is cpu limited otherwise nobody will see improvement with the incoming vr optimization due to cpu limitations.
Harlikwin Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 I forget the member, but he had like ay 6 series proc. Went from a 1080 to a 2080 and saw almost no improvment. Then changed to a 9900k and saw a big improvment. New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog.
