Strider32 Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 So first of all, Thank you Heatblur for making such an amazing module, the amount of detail is astonishing. Anyways, I recently discovered that DCS develops intense stuttering whenever I fly the Tomcat. So, I decided to investigate the issue and figure what may be the cause. I set up a simple mission with a departure out of Nellis, no other units were present. The typical route was out towards Creech and around the target ranges. I also removed all of my mods. My Specs Intel Core i7-6700K @4 GHz 16GB DDR4 1TB HDD, 256GB SSD (DCS installed on HDD as OS is on SSD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Windows 10 64bit I first had a look at Task Manager to see if everything looked OK. Everything looked like it was running decently, CPU was doing fine and GPU was running as intended, nothing out of the ordinary. However, I did notice that my disk usage had spiked whenever a stutter occured. I then lowered all of my DCS settings to minimum and removed all my settings from NVIDIA Control Panel. It offered no improvement as the stutters remained constant. My disk usage had also dropped after I performed this step. I did notice that the stutters had always occurred when going to a new area of the map, if I were to turn around and backtrack, the stutters would disappear for around 30 to 50 seconds, they would then return as before. I had turned up the preload radius as this could improve the issue. It had only a marginal result on performance and the stuttering was slightly improved. I then reset my CPU clock back to 4Ghz, which had further improved the stuttering, but they were still very prominent. I tested other aircraft to see if i could repeat the results, however they ran buttery smooth with zero stutters. I also tested other maps, Caucasus has stuttering but isn't as aggressive as NTTR or Persian Gulf. Given the results, other aircraft such as the F/A-18 or the A-10C had no issues while the F-14 had massive stuttering, Particularly on NTTR and the Persian Gulf. My DCS settings were no factor as the issue was still occurring with the minimum settings. My CPU clock may have been a contributing factor but only had a marginal improvement. I concluded that the Tomcat may be the cause of the stuttering. I have so far been unable to find a solution, any recommendations would be appreciated. I am not the brightest when it comes to computers so please forgive me:), Hornet 101 My Liveries https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/user-is-Strider32/apply/ Intel Core i7-6700K @4.0 GHz | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super 8GB | 8GB DDR4 x2 | Kingston 256GB SSD (OS Installed) | Crucial BX500 1TB SSD (DCS World Installed) | Toshiba 1TB HDD | Windows 10 64bit | LG 27" 75Hz Monitor | TM Warthog w/VIRPIL WarBRD Base | Saitek Pro Flight Pedals | Track IR
ElementLT Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 Hi! So it stutters when you move to a different area on the map? What is your pre-load radius set to? Maybe you could bump it up. What is the speed on your 16gig RAM? You may simply just need to install DCS to run off of an SSD. Coming Soon... The Fraternity Returns : https://thefraternitysim.com/
Strider32 Posted May 31, 2019 Author Posted May 31, 2019 I did a little more testing and the cause was my HDD, I deleted DCS World and reinstalled it and the Tomcat onto the SSD and the stuttering was gone, I was surprised that DCS only took up around 65Gb as a clean install. I had just enough room to squeeze a clean DCS install onto the SSD. Looks like I have to invest an another SSD just for DCS World. Thank You for the suggestion. jross194 Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Have the same issue and went through similar steps, minus the new SSD drive. Just seems to me that the Tomcat is, for some reason, going to disk a lot more than other modules (F18, AV8, F5 are the only other's I use), none of them have this issue. That may explain why your installing on the SSD appears to resolve the stutters. But my question is, why is it going to disk so much in the first place. Assuming this is the real issue. My install is 135+ GB! A dedicated SSD is not in the budget for a bit :( i6700k 4.4mhz, 32Gb, nVidia 1080, Odyssey+, CH Products, Derek Speare Designs button box, Bass shaker w/SimShaker For Aviators
draconus Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 My install is 135+ GB! A dedicated SSD is not in the budget for a bit :( DCS demands top-notch PC to play decently. F-14B is the most demanding module. 240GB SSD costs like $30 - it is the cheapest part of your rig and even cheaper than most modules. Just get it already and get over it. Otoh, I too got bad stutters (stops for like a 1-3s) recently even in NTTR, SP, simple mission - just another aircraft or two.
