DCS and Steam VR wont load

I have been playing DCS using SteamVR for about a month on my new Odessey+ trying to get the best settings.

About a week ago both DCS and SteamVr refused to load.

Both of them would log in to my account and say that they were loading.

DCS would stop with a runtime error and SteamVR simply starts loading and then disappears.

DCS will not run in normal 2d version either.

I also had blackscreen issues which seem to have gone now that I have reset Windows 10.

Nothing that I have done has changed SteamVR or DCS.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled SteamVR with no change.

If I want to uninstall and reinstall DCS it would be a big download and cost me an activation on the modules I presume.

I cannot get onto DCS to deactivate the modules and have plenty of lives left so I'm not too worried about that aspect.

This all seems to have happened after the last Windows 10 update.

I have stress tested all of the hardware and can't find any issues there.

It will repair, cleanup, and reinstall/check runtimes.

 

In user\savegames\DCS\Mods folder remove mods you eventually have installed, and delete, in user\savegames\DCS\config\ the file options.lua (clean reset of DCS settings).

 

Usually this allow to load DCS again.

 

Eventually reinstall gpu driver.

Hi thanks for the advice.

I have now done all of those things with no change whatsoever.

My wife has a computer that she uses for the internet and bill paying etc.

It too has died with blackscreen issues.

If I reset it - reload windows keeping her settings - it works until it is turned off and then fails again and will not restart.

It just seems too much of a coincidence that they have both started playing up at the same time with similar symptoms.

I'll keep trying but I am beginning to think that the Windows update is responsible.

Maybe it only effects older computers like ours.

please make sure windows and all drivers are up to date.

If you are still having issues please attach your dcs.log which can be found in the saved games folder in the dcs folder and logs.

Also please let us know your system spec.

I am having trouble with windows 10 and I believe that my problems with DCS and steam are probably caused by that.

I have been wasting most of the day for the last week or more trying to sort out windows with no success.

Any clues to what is going on may help with the other issues.I'll try to attach the logs in case they provide any ideas.

That means you only have 3GB of virtual memory set for 16GB of ram - it's too low and can strongly cause crash - set virtual memory to 16GB (at least - I have 32 + 32 (DCS shows 32/64) and DCS took in SP yesterday 18 +25 in PG map)

I read and answered the other post before I read this one.

I'll give the virtual memory a go but I'm definitely going to get rid of build 1903 first.

I had a look at the list of problems that it is causing and games not loading properly is one of them.

I had a look and my pagefile setting is 3gb.

It is set automatically .

My C: drive is almost totally full so that could explain some of the problems I have been having.

I have a 450 gb ssd that I am going to replace my existing c: drive with (120gb ssd)

That should allow me to set a much greater amount for the pagefile.

My games are on a separate 500gb ssd.

Should I allocate space for the pagefile on that drive or leave it on c , or set it on both ?

Is there an upper limit to the amount I should set or as you say about the same as ram??

This does meet consensus for users having crashes because too low ram/pagefile, with exact numbers (I don't know why so precize setting counts ? but anyway it works) :

If you get some nice amount of free space with greater SSD I'll even advise to increase pagefile/virtual memory to 32 GB, you'll have 16GB real ram + 32 GB virtual, wich in my experience should be enough.

(I only set it on c: (1TB ssd, with OS + DCS also on it) but you can have several ssd drives with pagefile)

Hi BIGNEWY and Toutenglisse ,

I have loaded win10 build 1809 to a new ssd. It is very good with no problems so far. It looks like maybe my gear is just too old to work with 1903 or maybe a glitch in 1903 itself.

Anyway thanks for the help and if you have any wonderful ideas to get DCS running on all 4 cores I'd appreciate them.

I will be upping the virtual memory first off.
