VampireNZ Posted July 6, 2019 Posted July 6, 2019 (edited) Yeah its not great. It "seems" like it should be easy to do, put a mask on the scene like non VR, but who knows. Well, because this 'effect' is just plain ridiculous in VR, after a little searching I found a certain post - https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3394085&postcount=13 Lets just say I was a little disappointed that it was an effect placed in by DCS to specifically blur the cockpit - and totally break any usable functionality for all VR users! Simple one-line that is easily changed - so yes very easy to do. This could be a simple check box in Options for 'VR NVG Goggles' to set this focus distance to 0...and actually enable VR users to enjoy night flying again. It does make the 'NVG sparkle' effect just look like a flat panel a metre or so in front of your face, which could be the reason for the focus setting - but TBH I really couldn't care less about that because I can use NVG's again and see stuff! I guess then you will get people complaining about the 'NVG effect looking flat in VR' - not knowing the alternative, so I will give that to you ED. Yes it's not 'realistic' (in b4 the realism pitchfork brigade) - but until ED have just the correct portion of the VR display as NVG and we can see under them (albeit in the non-sweetspot part of the headset) - then this will do VERY nicely thanks. Lets get away from this 'realism at the expense of actual useablility and enjoyment of the sim' approach I have seen creeping in. Just give people the option. OvGME attached for it, just unzip and place with your other mods and enable.NVG Focus Fix.rar Edited July 6, 2019 by VampireNZ Vampire

Interestingly, I was night flying in the F18 last nigh, and I took off the headset, and the display screen on the monitor was actually correct, i.e. TP tube NVG view, but you could see the rest of the cockpit around it in focus with the blue/green lights. Not sure why that doesn't work in VR like that, but that would be ideal. (VR only got the full green view). New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. AlphaOneSix Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 The PVS-31s have adjustable gain, some of our ground guys have those. Personally, I've been using AVS-9s for the last 12 or so years. Two years ago (maybe three?) we switched from green phosphor to white phosphor. I personally prefer the white phosphor. But to add to your point, I haven't seen any aviation "approved" night vision goggles that have a manually adjustable gain, only the units for ground use have that. I personally find that feature to not be very useful. But then again I use them while flying, not while on the ground.
Harlikwin Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 (edited) PVS-31's aren't flight rated. At a guess partly because they do have variable gain. Also probably due to weight. They do have a helmet mountable power source that probably helps with that. Var gain, is kinda useful on the ground. But its a pretty narrow set of circumstances where it is. Its much more useful on magnified optics. Like I said I've used nods for a very long time, and I can count the times I wished I had var gain when I didn't on one hand. I've used, built and fixed Anvis gogs for like 20+ years. One thing I did find weird is that the Russian gogs, do use a WP type display, which is odd since I've never come across that in actual Russian NV I've seen and used. Usually their phospors are quite yellowish. Edited July 7, 2019 by Harlikwin New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. VampireNZ Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Well the blurred cockpit when looking through nods IS realistic. So despite my specific comment "Yes it's not 'realistic' (in b4 the realism pitchfork brigade) - but until ED have just the correct portion of the VR display as NVG and we can see under them (albeit in the non-sweetspot part of the headset) - then this will do VERY nicely thanks."..I see you still felt the need to state the fact - good on ya lol. Yes it would be great if it was displayed correctly in VR. Regarding the gain on NVG and flight rated etc - as the FE I did use different goggles than the pilots did - so that may have something to do with it. Vampire
Harlikwin Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 I only mentioned it because I feel its one of few aspects of NVG's they actually get right. There are so many other things wrong its not even funny. :) New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog.
