over the past 2 weeks or so ive noticed that the phoenix have become VERY unreliable in bvr (work fine in acm mode though).

we do i training mission that involves f14 cap vs 2 pairs of mig 21s and i could always take them all out with 4 maybe 5 phoenix but recently the missiles seem to track all way in and then veer away at the last second approx 50% of the time, im not loosing lock and it does the same on tws or stt, any ideas whats going on?

FYI they are active off the rails atm till fixed so lock doesn't matter. Seemed same to last time out tho.maybe a server lag problem.

Thank you for reporting it, although we haven't changed anything on our side regarding the phoenix. I was recently lucky enough to fly a couple hours on a server again, and they seemed to work quite fine for me, even bagged couple 50+ nm kills. But we will keep an eye on it. Since what you describe is most likely related to guidance, I will log it as a DCS bug.

thanks for taking note, it could just be me. i can only say that it feels different to me, seems much easier to defeat with chaff than before, iv just done another mission that ive done several times against ai, it took me (and ai wingman) a total of 7 phoenix (a mk64) and a sidewinder to kill 2x mig 23 lol they all tracked perfectly till a mile or so out then they did a hard turn to chase the chaff.

i never lost lock at any point

It's a DCS thing shoot at 40 and turn away they still track not Heatblurs problem it's a DCS thing as I understand it. In order to make it Fox3 capable it had to be active from the rail no matter the range.

Until ED let Heatblur reprogram it.

@eatthis I'm doing some AIM-54 PK tests. I did ~350 tests so far in difference conditions (aspect, range, altitude). I need around 300 more then I post some data.

The AIM-54 is defeated somwhow easily by head-on, fast, same altitude AI aircraft. They pull 90° while chaffing and often the missile chases the squirrels instead of the target. Something similar happens to target hdg perpendicularly.

For instance:

rio11-aim-54-pk-miss-a-20nm-15000-hot.jpeg

If a vertical offset (target higher) is introduced, the avg hit% increases by 10%-20%. The "Notching" or perpendicular target instead sometimes just have to pop chaffs and that's it. At longer dinstances instead the AIM-54C may simply not have enough energy due to it's trajectory (which is not lead, so at some point - probably when ED's guidance kicks in and missile goes active - it drastically turns and bleeds a lot of speed).

The AIM-54 is not active off the rail, if we mean "pitbull".I did dozen tests and the AIM-54 doesn't guide itself immediately. It does work similarly to an AIM-120 but the WCS still have a huge impact on it's behaviour. AFAIK, the AIM-54 shouldn't turn active spontaneously but the WCS should command it.

E.g., if you turn the WCS from XMIT to STBY on a long-distance launch, the AIM-54 drops its lofting trajectory and goes flat. At some point (10nm to the target or where the target was suppoused to be) it goes active even if the WCS is still inactive. That shouldn't happen. At any time you can turn the WCS to XMIT again and the lofting trajectory resumes.

This is what happens if you keep toggling the WCS. Rollercoaster!

I have noticed a huge change in missile guidance since the last patch prior to the big F-14 update... and quite frankly, missile guidance is a joke right now... it's insanely easy to notch all missiles, even 120's at less than 5 miles.

I was following (slightly below) some some AI SU-25T's last night and fired 54's at them at 5 miles... they just pulled into a tight turn / dive, and the missile instantly went stupid. I never lost lock, by the way... did this several more times and tried AIM-7's with the same result...

Thanks for that info I must admit I assumed that the radar made no difference as the PK seemed about the same if I kept contact or not.
