ZeroReady Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 A friend and I tried to hit a strike target on GAW at night. It was an ammo dump, we had the coords, gave them to Jester as a surface target. Navigated to the target, then had trouble figuring out which building it was. Only way to tell we were over the target was the HSD waypoint indicator flipped over, but there were several buildings down there and we never could ID the right one. Is there a better way? Any way to have the HUD put the designator in computer target mode on the target automatically with the coords entered? Is precision night bombing with dumb bombs just over the Tomcats's head?
Emmy Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Hard to put “Precision” and “Dumb Bombs” and “Night” in the same sentence for most aircraft... ZeroReady Posted September 14, 2019 Author Posted September 14, 2019 Hard to put “Precision” and “Dumb Bombs” and “Night” in the same sentence for most aircraft... LOL I understand. But for a large target like a power plant or ammo dump, I would think dropping a few mk84s in computer target would get the job done. Not trying to plink Sadam Hussains tanks from angels 20. Even in daytime though it's still hard to desegnate a ground target in the cat without lining up the BFL and slewing the desegnator down while looking out the camera. I feel like if you have the coords put in, there should be some kind of marker on the hud over the target. Is the jet just not capable of doing that?
AcroGimp Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Did you have LANTIRN mounted? Have JESTER enter coords as ST, LANTIRN ON, QWPT until ST, search for correct target and designate, then CMPTR bomb should work. You'll get BFL on the HUD and I think a countdown on LANTIRN Display - but I have been spending a lot of time with GBU's lately. DISCO No we weren't using lantirns as we were both piloting separate jets with jester. I didn't know jester could do anything with the lantirns.
Ignition Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 If you don't see smoke over the target its impossible, even in daytime its almost impossible. You need smoke.

Naquaii Posted September 15, 2019 Posted September 15, 2019 Unfortunately what you're trying to do is more or less the reason for the implementation of the LANTIRN pod, the basic INS in the F-14 isn't exact enough to do what you want even if it could display it on the HUD.

That makes sense thanks. Start to take a lot for granted going from A10C and AV8B to the Tomcat.
