Does anyone have a mission for a human RIO to practice detecting targets, especially if they spawn randomly? Something like what was used in the Grim Reapers' RIO school video?

I've been using the VIS-IDENT 2.0 mission, but their location is getting too predictable (although their reaction is random!)

Can try with this one. I made it and been using it for just that - and gave it a wrapping of sorts :)

Mission Briefing:

[ Black Sea Intercepts ]

Its late October 1983 and hell is loose, after the CVN 68 Carrier Group suddenly found itself teleported to the middle of the Black Sea, because David Lightman, a young Seattle high school student, hacked his way into the WOPR (War Operation Plan Response) mainframe at NORAD and "played a bit of Global Thermonuclear War" -as he puts it.

The entire region is shitting their pants and on highest alert. General Secretary Yuri Andropov has ordered the Black Sea fleet to leave port and put all military assets in the region in full combat readiness. The situation is extremely volatile and the Soviets are dying to get a chance to 'inspect' the Carrier group. Do not let them near it!

Its 8:09 in the AM local, shortly after arrival and the sun is just about to break the horizon. You are sitting on the ramp in a fueled F-14 armed with 2x AIM-9L, 2x AIM-7, 2x AIM-54A mk60, 2x fuel, and about to embark on your task.

Your task is BARCAP (Barrier Combat Air Patrol) around the Carrier Group. Dont let anything none-NATO inside 70 nautical miles of the USS Nimitz. Its not possible to extend this border limit due to the confined space in the region.

- Intercept and get on their flight leads wing (inside a 328 feet zone for fighters and 656 feet for bombers) and see if they divert. Might take some time.

- Stay inside the zone until they divert. If you leave the zone the 'timer' resets.

- Best to put them between you and the Soviet Union, and stay slightly lower to avoid them crashing into you when they divert.

- Fighters and fighter bombers might become hostile when you get close.

!! The Rules of Engagements are clear and simple: DO NOT FIRE UNTIL FIRED UPON !!

On mission start the soviets will come out to patrol their borders. MiG-23's and MiG-21's patrolling north and east, while Bulgarian MiG-21's are patrolling the west. Already on patrol are a A-50 and a Tu-142, also north and east.

South of Crimea and off the west coast are parts of the Black Sea fleet on patrol, shadowing our carrier group and searching for submarines with Ka-27 helicopters.

To the south is Turkey (NATO allies), patrolled by F-4E's.

What you need to do is see trough this and detect contacts with some other intentions, intercept them and make them divert. And remember, rules of engagement is 'Return Fire'.

Make use of Awacs Bogey Dope, Picture (remember the Bullseye is at Carrier location), Link-4 Datalink, the F-14's own powerful AWG-9 radar and of course your own excellent situational awareness.

- All F-14's have INS Reference Alignment Stored, for quicker alignment (less chance of rubbing wings).

- Datalink waypoints have been added for easier orientation at: South tip of Crimea, Novorossiysk, Batumi, Bulgarian east tip.
