DCS FIGHTER PILOT Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 I have been doing some tests with the Aim-54 missiles lately and have noticed that they change their concavity very abruptly and violently during the terminal guidance phase resulting in a major loss of energy. The missile leaves the aircraft fine and climbs up to its max altitude ok but as it approaches the target it quickly changes its flight path, from a concave upwards parabolic motion to a sudden concave downward parabolic motion to intercept the target. This is where the problem is. Ideally, the missile should smoothly transition from this phase to the interception phase. Please see tracks below.Rough Transitions.trkRough Transitions 2.trkRough Transitions 3.trk

DCS FIGHTER PILOT Posted November 10, 2019 Author Posted November 10, 2019 Old news. Are they planning to address it?
Tholozor Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 The Phoenix is going to be getting an entirely new missile API so it behaves properly and not just like a big AMRAAM. nighthawk2174 Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 Yeah but unfortunately this won't include the lofting code which is the issue here.
Arctander Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 The Phoenix is going to be getting an entirely new missile API so it behaves properly and not just like a big AMRAAM. Does that mean it will be less agile as well or is that currently correct?
nighthawk2174 Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 Quite simply it will be upgrading the behavior as in how it relates to your radar mode. If your in STT it will act like a Fox 1 now instead of just a big amraam. In TWS it will need constant computer guidance updates to the point where the computer itself tells it to go active. Now of course if you loose track of a target but then require it this will still allow the missile to guide towards the target. Which is most defiantly not like the big amraam it is now. Beyond this, as far as HB as said, they have no additional control over the calculation of induced drag, guidance, lofting, or really anything else.
almullao Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 This is an issue with all missiles. On the other hand, the drag is actually calcylated differently, as HB have shown during the development, things like air density they have no control on. Currently, the aim54 features less drag than an amraam, do your testing. The update coming to the Phoenix will be related to it's guidance and could also hurt its maneuverability, now there is no g limit on Phoenix, I made my testing the missile pulled nearly 50g to intercept a 10g empty mig29. I guess the g limit will go back to 18g at ideal conditions and less when slow.
