ducktales Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 (edited) Current shopping cart looks like: 9700K 2080TI EVGA Black Reverb Does DCS use more than 16GB in multiplayer? Will having 16GB cause stuttering (going back and forth to the SSD for memory)? I already have 16GB 3200 from my last build and after doubling my initial budget, I want to try and keep some of my sanity. My case and cooling solution won't allow for a 9900K, plus I've seen a few members disable HT on their 9900k's. Which cores (0-7) does DCS use? I'd like to push only a few cores to 5.1 or 5.2 since my SFFPC cooling is limited. Very new to DCS and VR, but lots of digging over the past month has brought me to this point. A bit of searching through the Reverb thread didn't give me the answers I was seeking. Edited December 2, 2019 by ducktales
Mr_sukebe Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 In multiplayer, I find it very common to see more than 16GB used and have breached 32GB when both hosting a mission and flying on the same PC. DCS primarily uses a single core, with a secondary picking up the audio (or so I've read). Leave the management of which to Windows. 7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat
Harlikwin Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 I have your computer :) and your headset ;) (Actually your 2080ti is better than mine)... I have 32gigs of RAM, I had 16 for a week before I upgraded, guess why? I wouldn't worry about trying to corral cores, I pretty much gave up on OC'ing even I gave it a mild kick up to 5ghz with a stock coolermaster cooler and its fine. New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1) Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

Harlikwin Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 LOL, it seems I have fan club. I hope you will be happy with it. I certainly am happy with my setup (recent reverb BS aside). I bought the consumer one so hopefully it includes some better internals, as well as the clip for the connector. *edit: haha, fan indeed. I'm assuming you're also hitting ~45FPS with your setup? Is it jarring at all? Edited December 2, 2019 by ducktales
ducktales Posted December 2, 2019 Author Posted December 2, 2019 32GB all the way, regardless if VR or not That's what I figured.. In multiplayer, I find it very common to see more than 16GB used and have breached 32GB when both hosting a mission and flying on the same PC. DCS primarily uses a single core, with a secondary picking up the audio (or so I've read). Leave the management of which to Windows. I would hope it had a usual range of cores that it picked (let's say usually 0-3 vs 4-7). SFFPC requires more thermal consideration than matx/atx with radiators, so if I can get away with not doing all core, I can push a bit more frequency.

I'm assuming you're also hitting ~45FPS with your setup? Is it jarring at all? Well, in theory the consumer one should be worse since pro was designed for heavy duty VRcade/professional use. But honestly I think they are basically the same thing the only real difference being the face cushion and warranty, which I'm finding out is a bad joke for a "pro" product, over week since I asked for replacment, "maybe" one coming friday, unless it gets pushed back like the cable did (1 month to replace the cable). I honestly stopped worrying about frame rates once I got it compared to my CV1 rift. It looks good, and is mostly smooth under most conditions while still looking good. I get the occasional stutter here or there online. And if you have tracking issues, just make sure the lights are on and you have a good contrast background in front of you for it to track. The main thing you want to do though is never use the DCS PD. Rather use the steamVR resolution % I run mine at ~150% SS, and PD1.0. 2X MSAA and most of the GFX settings in the high/mid range. depending on what it is. There are some guys in the VR thread experimenting with replacing more of the DCS settings with native Nvidia settings which seem to give better results too. Even with a 9900k I don't think you could run DCS full blast on a reverb but I'm honestly very impressed with how good it works. Ah, I didn't mean better than the pro, but better than Rev 1 / Version 1. I've heard of the issues and recent HP fixes, and I hope that the consumer one shares in these fixes. Thanks for the advice on PD! I'm assuming 150% SS brings it pretty close to native res?

Yeah, I'm hoping my replacement (whenever it actually shows up) has the whole cable thing fixed. Well the steam tool will show you whatever % as an actual res number, so ideally 100% is 2160x2160 or whatnot. 150% should be like 3kx3k. WMR is kinda ****y like that, at the minimum set it like 2160x2160, I think for me that was like 108% or something weird. I actually haven't found that its a huge improvement quality wise, but there is one. MSAA mainly cuts down on the shimmering in DCS so its good to use as well. Some sarge guy has "startup guide" that he put together based on other folks suggestions, I don't have the link but I hear its a good place to start.
