GCI units/Equipment

How and what units do I place to insert a GCI station on the mission map ?

 

I have searched through the available Mission planner objects but cannot find a specific GCI radar type object.

It has been a long time since I made a mission with GCI in it but from what I remember, just place your AI fighter aircraft on an airbase and set its TASK to GCI. If an enemy comes withion a set distance (sorry i cant recall what it is maybe 140km??), then the GCI will take off and attempt an intercept.

Just tried it out quickly and you need to place a radar unit on the map to make it work, use 55G6 EWR or 1L13 EWR.

I'm not sure that's what he's referring to. You are describing the GAI (Ground Alert Intercept). IvanK also asked this question in the 'AWACs are silent' thread. My assumption given that thread's context --perhaps incorrect-- was that he was looking to set up AWACs type behavior for the ground radars. This was my answer there: There isn't one. As modeled in the sim, the two EWR units (1L13 and 55G6) provide their own GCI in the form of a data link.

 

BTW, the GAI aircraft will launch without either ground based radar but the range is reduced to something like 60km. I don't recall if LOS issues are involved or not. Like you, I haven't set up GAI flights in ages.

Thanks Ironhand. I have tried placing these units on the map but fail to get any Data link info or GCI info when I ask for vectors to the nearest bandit. The same goes for Naval vessels.

 

Am I right to assume in FC that the only GCI you can get both DL and Range bearing can only be provided by AWACS aircraft ?

 

Also with refrence to Altitude High Low etc as called by AWACS what are the cutoff altitudes for these bands ?

You don't have to ask for the datalink from the EWR stations. It's sent to the HDD automatically. Been a long time since I've used datalink. At one time your radar had to be: Off. Can't remember now if that's still the case.

Well after placing multiple GCI capable units and Naval vessels, with plenty of aerial targets I cannot get any Data link info or GCI provided vectors. I am at a loss to get these working.

From EWR, you will only get the datalink. You will not get vectors like you would from AWACs. Are you in BVR mode with radar off? That's the setup for datalink. I just realized I wasn't clear in my previous response that you have to be in an A2A mode.

I have placed the following equipment. IL13EWR, 55G6EWR, Moscow vessel, Kuznetsov Cv. All within radar coverage of aircraft at 2000m plus with Targets ranges to radar of <100Km with targets at 2000m altitude. Moscow engages targets with SAMs okay.

 

My aircraft Mig29S or SU27 No Data Link recieved at all in AA mode with radar Off or On.

Try placing only 1 EWR object into the mission. I was working on a mission with two EWR on each side. However I only received datalink info from one of the radars. I do not know if one EWR is destroyed if the other will take its place. Perhaps you are having a similar issue where an enemy is located outside the range of the EWR you are datalinked with.
