Chopper A-10 Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 Is either the AIM-120D or something comparable to the A-54 Phoenix missile coming to the Hornet this year?? The Tomcat with the Phoenix is so far superior to the 120C . . the 120D is what the newer Hornets are using. Just hoping that it's out there being worked on, thanks for listening. i7-7700K 4.20Ghz | GeForce GTX 1080Ti DUKE | ASUS Maximus IX Hero Z270 | Samsung 960 | Corsair CPU Cooler | G.SKILL 32GB | Oculus VR Rift | Saitek PRO Pedals & TM HOTAS Warthog Throttle & Joystick |
Etirion Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 No, the 120D is not coming to our hornet. But there will be updates to the amraam in the near future as stated in the new years newsletter. https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3285514&postcount=13
Chopper A-10 Posted February 3, 2020 Author Posted February 3, 2020 Thanks, disappointed, but thanks for getting back so quickly i7-7700K 4.20Ghz | GeForce GTX 1080Ti DUKE | ASUS Maximus IX Hero Z270 | Samsung 960 | Corsair CPU Cooler | G.SKILL 32GB | Oculus VR Rift | Saitek PRO Pedals & TM HOTAS Warthog Throttle & Joystick |
KidCharlemagne Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 As cool (and strange) as it would've been for the Hornet to carry AIM-54's, that missile was exclusive to the Tomcat. The upcoming AMRAAM changes should help out us Hornet fans though!
nighthawk2174 Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Yeah anything beyond the C5 (what we have right now) is just way to classified to hope to get any kind of reliable stats on. Hec I don't even know if the D is the same size as the C models.
CarbonFox Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 The AIM-120D is only this year just entering service I believe so yeah, a pipe dream. F/A-18C; A-10C; F-14B; Mirage 2000C; A-4E; F-16C; Flaming Cliffs 3
KlarSnow Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Aim-120D has been in service since at least 2015, and yes its a pipe dream in DCS. Better to go back and do an AIM-120C and an A, and then give us an actual C5 improvement, for a little variety, rather than just the B/C5 that we have. Gives you the ability to better match ordnance to time frames, even if you can’t do the jets.
VpR81 Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Is the D-Model even beeing implemented to Legacy Hornets in RL, or is it Super Hornet exclusive? KlarSnow Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 It works with everything AFAIK, If its operational its getting implemented, how many will actually be available to the VMFA guys who knows, probly not since they are usually last in the bucket for ordnance and funding regarding that stuff, but the software implementation is pretty straightforward. Just be whatever the next version of the OFP is needed. Which sometimes comes out before the missile, cause these things sit in development and test for a long time...
VpR81 Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Ok, thanks for the answer. I just thought that the AN/APG-73 may not be able to handle the D... or at least unable to use it´s full potential, related to limitations compared to the AN/APG-79 of the Super Hornets... KlarSnow Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Radar makes no difference in which variant of amraam it can support. F-15s and 16s of various mech scanned or Aesa radars, just like the hornet/super hornet with the 73 or 79 can support all variants of the amraam no problem.

Based on what I've read, the sequestration pushed adoption of the AMRAAM-D back, especially with the US Navy to 2022. I thought AF was taking it this year. Harker Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 So what will the update to the 120C do? Hopefully finalize the drag coefficient adjustments and motor thrust value and most importantly, adjust the guidance profile. And general FOX3 fixes, such as correct guidance during all phases. Wikipedia being out of date is no surprise. "The AIM-120D (P3I Phase 4, formerly known as AIM-120C-8) is a development of the AIM-120C with a two-way data link, more accurate navigation using a GPS-enhanced IMU, an expanded no-escape envelope, and improved HOBS (high off-boresight) capability. The AIM-120D max speed is Mach 4[7] and AIM-120D is a joint USAF/USN project, and is currently in the testing phase. The USN was scheduled to field it from 2014, and AIM-120D will be carried by all Pacific carrier groups by 2020, although the 2013 sequestration cuts could push back this later date to 2022."
