londo-cat Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Ah... to CNC or not to CNC... now THAT is the question! Apparently, it's to CNC. Question answered!
Triggerhappy69 Posted September 14, 2009 Author Posted September 14, 2009 The double edge sword we call CnC... Ah... to CNC or not to CNC... now THAT is the question! Apparently, it's to CNC. Question answered! I started making the Target Panel today. The Autopilot Panel has been coated with four layers of white gloss paint, and is drying as wee speak! After this I'll add 3-4 coats of dull black paint over the white. Why all this paint? Well, all my panels are backlighted from within with LED's. And the white glossy paint makes the light reflect inside the 8mm Plexi plate, and spread the light more inside. The text on the panels are engraved with my personal DIY engraver. I just cut a 6mm rod (an old concrete hammer-bore I cut to this lenght. Because they are make from metal that is more elastic than metal bores) to 50mm lenght. And grinded it to a fine point on a grinder while the 6mm rod was mounted in a drill. The rotation will make sure you always make the tip centered while grinding. After grinding it to the right shape I heated the tip with a small gas solder iron (the cheap "pen" type you get at hardware stores), and cooled it under running water to harden the edges. THE PANEL! A cnc is a really neat tool when once you get arround how it works..! And as you see, it's not that hard to make one yourselves either.. Also the panels come out looking GREAT..! .. that is untill the thing all of a sudden catches fire..!:helpsmilie: I used a dirt cheap wood milling motor. And it apears to not hold toghether when I run it for extended periods.! All of a sudden flames shot out of it and it started making unpleasant noises.. So now I have to buy a new, and better, motor.. He He.. "But (504)Brewber said they were'nt friendly.. So I took'em out.!" [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

londo-cat Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Getting ready for some engraving now: Wow! What a difference a bit of paint makes! One question and it looks like you paint the whole thing white first, when you paint it black, do you put in masking tape where the engraved plates go before you paint it black or is it scraped off prior to the plates being inserted?
Triggerhappy69 Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Actually, neither of those methods..!? There are no engraved plates. The first layer of white gloss is to let the light from the LED's, that are embedded into the panel from behind, light bounce back and spread more evenly. Without being absorbed or diffused by from reflecting on a coat of black dull paint.. And I will mask the "text pockets" first, then engrave letters through the mask and approx 0,5mm into the panel. leaving a V-shaped groove that will emitt light from the inside. And lastly, if all goes well and before I remove the mask in the text-pockets. I will use this mask yo apply white paint only into the v-shaped groove from the engraver. Leaving light to come out only through the letters when backlighted. And all letters clearly visible in daytime.. ... If all goes well... 1 "But (504)Brewber said they were'nt friendly.. Alex_rcpilot Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 trigger, is it possible that the solvent from the top layer paint would penetrate and dissolve the base layer paint? DId you experiment on single side of an acrylic plate? When it's done, you'd be able to see from the clear side whether the base layer is still white nice and even.
Triggerhappy69 Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Well I guess you never know before you look.. But I did a test piece earlier. And as long as you let the last coat of white paint dry completly it doesn't seem to be a problem.. At least not with tis type spraypaint? But you point is excellent Alex..! I used to airbrush all the canopys of my RC helicopters. And you need to test a patch every time you try new paint combinations..! "But (504)Brewber said they were'nt friendly.. So I took'em out.!" Speaking of heli canopy, I miss flying RC. I flew my heli a couple of days ago before a ban on RC aircrafts was issued. A grand military parade is due on Oct. 1st, the National Day. Planes from the airforce will be part of the show. The authorities don't take any chances, they've set a perimeter downtown and areas around, and announced "anyone seen attempting to remote control any form of aircraft airborne shall be reported to the nearest precinct". The ban also involves balloons, kites and pigeons. It will remain effective for more than half a month.:( I'm wondering if there was other reasons for this ban, like potential threat from explosive UAV's....:music_whistling:

"please report yourself, ... please". :music_whistling: The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open | The important thing is not to stop questioning

I can just see some stool pigeon now...
Triggerhappy69 Posted September 19, 2009 Author Posted September 19, 2009 .......... then why do they NEED to have the parade? I mean, if it's such an obvious risk? And shouldn't the presence of this risk indicate that the parade really isn't that big a deal for people? .... again.. I just don't understand why we tend to lean towards obvious stupidity all the time.. "But (504)Brewber said they were'nt friendly.. So I took'em out.!" [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Alex_rcpilot Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Just wondering how they are going to track down the owners of those pigeons and balloons! I can just see some stool pigeon now... They don't need to worry about manned aircrafts, coz all airstrips are closed and barricaded. Civilian aircrafts (including ultralights) defueled, and very few people have access to hot air balloons here. So those remote controlled aircrafts I mentioned were primarily RC models. And if someone dials 110 (sort of like 911), it won't be difficult for cops nearby to bust the RC flier. I ain't taking this kinda risk. .......... then why do they NEED to have the parade? I mean, if it's such an obvious risk? And shouldn't the presence of this risk indicate that the parade really isn't that big a deal for people? .... again.. I just don't understand why we tend to lean towards obvious stupidity all the time.. Don't ask me buddy, I'm not enjoying this at all. You don't wanna reason with dictators. Anyway, keep an eye on international news on Oct 1st. They think it's well worth the trouble and risk to over-celebrate our country's 60th anniversary. Well, anyway, I don't wanna keep talking about this here. Perhaps do it with IM later.:music_whistling:
