S. Low Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 With the f14 I think I understand it, as I can get it to work. Basically in the tomcat I have aim9 selected, A/A mode, acm cover down (in this example), SW cooled, norm mode, and then I get a bandit in my hud and press cage/seam and it "unlocks" the seeker head of the SW causing the missile to look for an ir signature in a bigger radius (square shape I think) around the adl. The "lock" cases a higher pitched squeal than a regular boresight acquisition. Fire and forget. In the f18, A/A mode, aim 9 selected, SW cooled, when I get a bandit in my hud and I press cage/seam, nothing seems to happen. I still have to get the bandit directly on the adl to get an ir lock. I know my cage button works because I cage my hud during final on case 1. What's my issue here? What am I misunderstanding about SW ir locks, or the cage/seam function, or the difference in this mode between the two jets?

kengou Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Cage/uncage isn't the same as expanded acquisition modes of other aircraft. To use uncage, put the sidewinder seeker head (boresighted to aircraft or to the JHMCS) onto the bandit until you hear a tone, then hold uncage for a second and release. I don't believe there's a way in the Hornet to make the seeker itself "search" a wider angle for targets. To do that, you would use the radar ACM modes and the AIM-9 seeker would slave to the radar lock. This is how it works on the F-5 and the F-16. Aircraft without radar like the AV-8B NA or the A-10C have expanded acquisition modes since they don't have a radar to help them. The F-14 has it as well, for some reason. Ask Grumman. It's a pretty helpful mode, but if it's not there it's not there! Thanks for the edumacation
