Weta43 Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Not sure the blackhawk thing is exactly comparable - they would have assumed they were safe (Given US air dominance of the no fly zone, were probably 'low' but high enough to feel safe from RPG's & small arms ) & working on the assumption that anything above them was friendly, so no deliberately using cover (& even not trying to hide they were disappearing from the AWAC scope enough for everyone to lose track of who & where they were), no attempt at SA (no evasive manouvering after the first pass), just cruising along over the ridges high enough to stick out like a dogs ba**s. I'm not suggesting that I'd sell life insurance to the crew of a helicopter when there are A2A flights in the area, but this particular incident realy only proves that a pair of helicopters that are not trying to hide, can be found. Cheers.
ZoomBoy27 Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 This reminds me of a great feature in LongBow 2. There was a button to call down our own fast-mover in case you spotted a enemy fast-mover. That would be the thing to have in DCS:BS for AA problems. Implement it now :sorcerer: Like magic :) Thx. GGTharos Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 The documents seem to indicate that these guys were flying at 200' inside a valley, and one turned and dove to evade the attack. Yes, if they were 'bad guys' they would have been trying to hide, but that's not the point; the point is, once a fighter latches on to you, you are screwed, and your altitude has little effect on their weapons. In other words, being an eggbeater and being able to hover low provides you with zero defensive capability in and of its own - if you can find cover to screw with his radar and weapons, that's a different story. But if you're caught en-route or without ready cover, well ... Understand that it is VERY difficult to hide from a fighter flying around at 35000' and looking down at you when he knows you're there. We're not talking about a target trying to avoid detection - I am specifically saying that what you should DO is TRY TO AVOID DETECTION, and quit dreaming of slugging it out with fighters, 'cause once they see you on the scope and commit, it's pretty much over for you. Yeah, you could escape - the chances are somewhat slim though. Eagle Driver Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Sounds fun, I kinda wanna do the whole helo vs fighter thing anyway after you've said that. Then again, I want to be on the F-15 side of the equation, I was really looking foreward to Kamov-CAP until DCS was announced. Erdem Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Why do I want to fight helicopters in the Ka-50? Well for one reason it's cool and something I haven't done in a simulator of this caliber. Also I found a vid on tube of the effects of a Vikhr on a plane and tank: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z03y04imhQg My video will take over the internet soon! Wikipedia, lots of aviaton websites, and youtube :) I ripped it from the documentary "''Su-27 Flanker - The Sukhoi story'' if you wonder where it's from. By the way, can we have an official video from ED showing the new Vikhr in action with WAFM?
GGTharos Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 There is not much to show - you could show it with screenshots ... the biggest observable effect of WAFM is that it flies with an AoA. Erdem Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Uh, well you could do it without WAFM can't you? :) I'm talking about the missile physics, like shooting the missile directly upwards and showing it fall down with correct physics, fluids(air) and lift modelling. More like a "show-off" of the new WAFM capabilities.
GGTharos Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Well yes - I think the AoA shows off the missile pointing nose up to maintain lift etc ... but yes, you could certainly fake it. However, I don't think it is terribly easy to fire a Vikhr straight up. :) I'm sure there is a reasonable scenario, but it would be difficult to achieve. Also, once out of the beam, due to rotation and existing control deflection, I don't think Vikhr likes to maintain ballistic flight, unlike more conventional missiles. Erdem Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 And I'd love to see a video of Vikhr losing beam and "not maintaining a ballistic flight" from BS *if* it has a WAFM :)
GGTharos Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 It nosedives :) Fatal attraction to the ground! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Erdem Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Sweet <3 I could spend hours playing with WAFM.

Eagle Driver Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 The AI seem good at it. I saw a Ka-50 in FC try to take on a whole squad of Hornets flying at Angles 20. He didn't last long, after one kill a phoenix from an escorting Tomcat got him. There was Kamov dust raining after that incident. GGTharos Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 Try it with a Heli, Viper ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
