DmitriKozlowsky Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 Overtorque needs sound and larger brighter light. Awfully easy to overtorque the engine. Inadvertent collective excursion into overtorque range, while not looking at instrument panel. There is gonna be more protection for engine in real life. Cant be that easy to blow an engine. Is it?
Jester986 Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 In real life you learn your aircraft. The position of the collective generally corresponds to a certain torque. It's not exact but enough to know when you need to look at the gauge when your longlining, which is when the lack of an audio cue becomes a problem. Otherwise you should be constantly scanning all your gauges in between scanning the environment. Your never flying around just staring out the window. Also in the aircraft I have the most experience in I can tell by the engine sound where its at. I'm not there yet with my other aircraft but luckily it has an extra set of gauges built into the door that I can see while long lining. Some newer helicopters do have audio cues for when your approaching or at max torque but I doubt the gazelle does. If someone could knows better than great lets get it added. But for most people its just a quick glance at the gauge in between checking everything else that you have to keep an eye on.
DmitriKozlowsky Posted March 11, 2020 Author Posted March 11, 2020 In DCS: Gazelle , and perhaps RL, the throttle is constant full open. Demanding more torque via collective up does not change the audible pitch of engine. There is no IDLE throttle setting, reducing throttle , once startup is finished and rotor system is ready for T/O, and in flight, shuts down the engine, by cutting throttle completely. It makes no sense to me, but that is how it works. So collective all the way and torque in red range with blinking warning LED, there is no change in sound aircraft makes. Obviously, we have no vibration feedback as we are not in an aircraft and not using FFB joystick. The warning over-torque light is very small and even looking forward it is easy to miss, and without audible warning, very easy to miss. It just needs to be brighter and more prominent.
