WelshZeCorgi Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Hi, I've been flying the 21 for a while and I cannot recall ever hearing or feeling (jetseat) a compressor stall. I've had the engine shut down while diving at speeds past mach 1, which I think causes compressor stalls, but the engine just spools down. I've done a few tests, watching the gauges to try and catch the surges, but they don't give the needle wobble that indicates compressor stall. I'm not familiar with the real 21 and wanted to ask if this was normal, a yet to be added feature or a bug.
rossmum Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 Turn off the PO-750 #1 switch while in flight and you'll hear them. Compressor stalls are exceptionally rare and generally only appear when you've taken damage, or make an extremely violent manoeuvre well beyond what you'd ever want to do.
Jonne Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 It was one of the praised features of the MiG-21, that it was nearly impossible to stall the engine. Unlike the Viggen for example. What you are referring to is a flameout, which happens during overspeed. At least that is what is simulated. There are still conflicting information around of what actually really happens when you overspeed the MiG-21 at low level. At least the early MiG-21 models had a problem with the fuel pump reaching its maximum flow and thus the engine flaming out due to insufficient fuel. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Schmidtfire Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 The one person to ask about stall, overspeed and flameouts is Novak (Dolphin887), developer aswell as former pilot of the MiG-21bis. I wish that Novak would post more about his time flying the MiG-21bis or do a Q/A. Seems like a really cool guy and he did an amazing job on the flight model.
Buzzles Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 If you wanna test it, you can set the nose cone control to manual and tweak the knob on the front top left dash to control extension/retraction. Easy to do on the ground. Fancy trying Star Citizen? Click here!

The manual specifically mentions compressor stalls as a feature, which is supposed to cause a loud bang. I'm not sure I've ever heard it either. There is even a switch you're supposed to click when it happens to set control of something to manual to mitigate it.
Jonne Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 I did hear it after losing automatic nose cone, so it is there. But to get there with the auto cone enabled, you have to do some really stupid stuff, which will more likely either give you a black out, or rip the airframe apart. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
