From FighterOps

"As many of you might already know, very specific and extremely confidential Area 51 terrain pictures with the latest developer’s diaries were leaked by an Area 51 forum individual... as a result they began appearing and circulating in various forums abroad, including the new DCS (Black Shark) website.

As a consequence to this, a few thoughtless forum members on the DCS (Black Shark) website believe they are doing everyone a huge favor by inappropriately accusing XSI of redistributing screenshots that are not from the Fighter Ops development, essentially playing a very immature senseless and tasteless game, based on their own futile assumptions. To the greater extent, they are generally making extreme fools of themselves.

This may be the result of feeling threatened or just plain resentment to our development, many accusations have been made against us with a demand for an explanation. First of all, we of course do not owe explanations to anyone; however we have made the decision to make a post to clear up any confusion and save certain people from looking more foolish.

We are certainly not in direct competition with DCS (Black Shark) or anyone else, in fact we support their development very much, but nevertheless we do see the rivalry forming between members.

To be frank, we were expecting some retort to these leaks, but not with this level of intensity… our position naturally is that we are more than flattered by the comparison some have expressed to our massive spherical Fighter Ops terrain engine in its progressive development to “Terragen”. Terragen and the Fighter Ops terrain engine are obviously completely different programs, designed for completely different purposes. All of our images have been produced in run time, where as Terragen renders single images only.

This is the situation which has occurred in this instance; the water rendering algorithms in particular were based off a number of ideas concepts and research thesis papers from 2004 and coded ourselves, into our engine, by Fighter Ops coders. This is the by-product of our research.

On the other hand as developers we are very conscious of the technology that is being developed at this level for various software products, how can we not be. Fighter Ops has been devouring this technology for some time, and it needs to draw on tomorrow’s software technology that is based fundamentally on ideas and examples that are profoundly researched and brought to existence in various forms.

Many of these forms consist of research papers, thesis papers, and dissertations etc that have been released for public domain. We are using many of these ideas to shape this technology for us… some of this is shown through examples. The same holds true for every cutting edge software entertainment developer… many development companies devote entire departments to this type of research, and that is precisely how games such as Crysis etc, are fashioned.

In fact you could do the same for many of the technologies in Crysis as with any other game; they have their roots in research papers and techniques in the public domain from which you could easily find similar demonstrations and programs. We do the same intense research through various departments, and because of that we are able to show off a development cycle of progressions through various mediums such as screenshots etc, and then substituted by new mediums that null the older previous versions. There is a very important reason for keeping this technology in-house and in Area 51, and that is for the reason that we can manage and control them with various technical and appropriate responses from experienced and qualified team members. They are not for inexperienced non developers to exploit.

There is no denying our existence in this market place and beyond, perhaps some see us as a future potential threat… we are not trying to protect ourselves, we are simply very confident in our abilities."

 Whatever.

This is from early November- I have no idea what he's going on about nor I have I seen any screens posted here.

I have. There were several shots of their terrain from high altitude as well as one shot of an undetailed F-16 (I think). The terrain was gorgeous, IMO.

What is he going on about? Probably the fact that material that you previously had to pay for is now freely available in the public domain without their permission. People tend to get uppity when intellectual property that they make people pay for is given out for free.

I see alot of F4 Frugal people over in the FighterOps forums. I'm hoping that he's wrong and that there isn't any rivalry. Not that I don't enjoy conflict, I just hate stupidity. ;)

Area51 screenshots of FO were leaked and posted here. That alone was a problem. Secondly, there was speculation that the screenshots were made from 3rd party software and/or pre-renders, as opposed to XSI's own in-game engine. Considering the information was leaked, we felt the appropriate thing to do was to allow XSI members a chance to rebuttle the accusations and then closed the thread. Later, it was deleted outright. We don't enjoy seeing ED's work leaked and speculated upon on other forums either.

The screenshots in question are now available on the FO forums, which is probably a better place for this discussion.

.. having read what the Foghter Ops guys are writing I'm left wondering..?

Allthough I completly understand the importency of not leaking software under development, and absolutely agree in the pursiut of plugging such leaks, I just don't get the overrall tone in what they write..?

It might be because I'm not one of those with English as my first language ? Or because it's late now, and I should maybe have gone to bed.? But I don't see what the motivation behind posting a general information post like this, and then filling it with a tone that implies that all us DCS members carry a grudge towards Fighter Ops is..? (looong sentence there.. must slow down..)

I think we all agree on the fact that Fighter Ops has a lot of potential and the work done so far is impressive. And who amonst us can say that we probably will not Buy&Try Fighter Ops when it's finally released..? Not a whole lot of us can I'm guessing..?

So why the tone..? I just don't get it..?

The only rivalry is the one in that man's head. Didn't they "leak" those shots around the time BS was getting all the oohs and ahhs from the press? Pot calling kettle black at its best. Strategically leaked maybe?

And those screen shots were taken from a water tech demo posted by a member here and I have zero doubt about that. Dude, if you can pan what they posted to the left a little, I'm afraid we'll see a rubber duck and a pier. lol

As I said to them before, all they had to do is post a few in-game shots with something flying over 'that' water and island...nothing. In fact, when the question was asked for the third time in the same forum, why the water and the island looked exactly the same as the ones from the tech demo, a guy from XSI said he doesn't know.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

This is what I was talking about.

Whats your agenda? What do you personally gain from saying this type of thing? Who are you to tell them the "have" to show something flying over that water? Why must there always be some hidden agenda that the developer has and everyone gets to play Mr. Conspiracy theorist and root out the evil plot? Lets see how you feel when you spend years and hundreds of thousands of dollars creating something and then someone brushes it aside as fake or someone else's work. Has anyone here ever created anything? Not made a skin or a mission for an existing game, but created a new thing from scratch? It isn't easy, and in the end its often thankless.

This isn't world politics or anything even remotely worthy of taking this seriously. We're all a bunch of nerds discussing a game on the internet as far as I'm concerned. There's no reason for any drama here. These aren't million dollar deals we have to agonize over, they're sims that usually cost less than a PS3 or Xbox game. Buy all, play all.

This isn't a jab at you personally leafer, I'm sorry if it sounds that way. I'm fairly new around here but you seem to be a very level headed person. I just find that the way communities act about this stuff is really stupid and silly. I'm surprise developers even run on-site forums anymore. I'd rather let those who want to make snide comments just take it elsewhere so I could focus on completing the project.

Nope. No agendas. Just didn't appreciate the lies in that announcement from XSI. I saw and posted in that thread he was talking about, and know for a fact that no one demanded anything from them. In fact, I commented how good the screen shots looked until another member came in and dropped the hammer.

And it wasn't until after I saw that piece of shiz report up there that I asked them to post in-game screen shots. I didn't demand anything, I asked. And I did say they don't have to but it would be nice.

Now, don't you think by zeroing in on a certain community and accusing people of spreading lies, they should in return try to prove that we were lying?

Lets see how you feel when you spend years and hundreds of thousands of dollars creating something and then someone brushes it aside as fake or someone else's work.

If I were him, I'd do the people who paid money for area51 a huge favor and posted the requested screen shots to shut me and a few others up. Man, that's two birds with one stone right there.

If I were a member of area51, I'd go hmmm... Of course, feeling loyal and all, I might not admit that the damned tech demo and XSI screen shots looked exactly the same.

Has anyone here ever created anything? Not made a skin or a mission for an existing game, but created a new thing from scratch? It isn't easy, and in the end its often thankless.

I'd rather thank the people who take a commercial product and tweak it to make it better out of the love for the hobby. ED will get my money and don't need my thank and the same for XSI.

Like I said, it wasn't until I read that piece above, a while back, that I felt a lil' effing peeved at the jab to this community. He could have left out the DCS BS part and target only the individual. Which is pretty much another member and myself. Two person! I get a funny feeling he was trying to create some friction between the two communities.

Hey, if anything, it's some of the fools over there that is hell-bent on looking down their nostrils at the people here so frog 'em. We've been taken so many flaks from certain individuals who, at every chance they get, love to make snide remarks about this sim. I'm just tired of that shiz.

Naw. No hard feelings here. I know where you're coming from. Stay here long enough and you'll know I'm the root of all that is evil and retarded. lol

peace and welcome to Flankerton
