Horns Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I have a bad neck which precludes me using a headset, so I have to use speakers on my PC desk. That means I need to use a separate mic on the same desk as my speakers for Vaicom Pro and AIRIO, so what I need is a unidirectional mic that will pick up my voice about 15 inches from its front, and not pick up the sound from my speakers behind it. Can anyone suggest a mic that would be capable of this? The only thing that makes this easier is that, as long as Vaicom understands me, there is no quality requirement. The last thing the world needs is me singing. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your suggestions. Greyman Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I'm afraid i don't have any recommendations for a mic, but you might want to keep an eye on Nvidia's upcoming noise cancelling software, that could make using your existing mic a lot easier. Unfortunately, it will need a compatible RTX graphics card, but i still thought it worth mentioning, just in case you were going to upgrade at some point. You could Google 'Nvidia Noise Cancelling Mic' or check out https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/guides/nvidia-rtx-voice-setup-guide/. It looks like it will be in beta very shortly, if not already, so shouldn't be long before it's live.
hornblower793 Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I don't use a desktop mike, but looking for top rated microphones for streaming might be a good starting point (or possibly a clip-on mic). I have used Logitech mics in the past and they were good, and I know that Rode, Shure and Blue all make highly recommended mics. I regularly weigh the pros and cons of upgrading my 1080 Ti, so this will probably tip the balance at some stage. I haven't seen any Logitech mics yet and only a couple of Shures, so it's probably time to look more widely. MAXsenna Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 Just remember to make a new Microsoft Speech Recognition profile, when you switch mics, and re-train!!! Recommendations from the Voice Attack forum/Discord.
Greyman Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 Well VA isn't listed on the examples of compatible apps, but we'll have to wait and see, i guess. I don't have an RTX card yet, but when i do get one, hopefully soon, when the 30 series come out, it would be a nice bonus if it works. No biggy if not though.

That's strange, does it list Microsoft Speech as well, as that's the only one that matters, but I know you know that! Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk
Baldrick33 Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I use one of these with speakers pretty loud and works well with VAICOM https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076M4HXFH AMD 5800X3D · MSI 4080 · Asus ROG Strix B550 Gaming · HP Reverb Pro · 1Tb M.2 NVMe, 32Gb Corsair Vengence 3600MHz DDR4 · Windows 11 · Thrustmaster TPR Pedals · VIRPIL T-50CM3 Base, Alpha Prime R. Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Looking at how it is set up, you effectively tell the nvidia software which mic you want to use and it converts it to a virtual device, called something like "Nvidia RTX Microphone". it is then this virtual device that you use in apps like Zoom, Discord and presumably Microsoft Speech. It is reputedly very good at removing anything that doesn't sound like a voice, even adhoc noises. There must be a delay between the software receiving the sound from the mic and it being output to the virtual mic device, but i guess the trick is in the fact that this is done in hardware, making the lag very small. I suspect it will be free with RTX cards, so if you have one, maybe give it a go.

Only got two really old Titans. ;-) But I might be wrong, but I think on the VA Discord, 'cause some dude was using it, and had some issues, but I can't remember it that was the problem or not. I'm actually very curious, to what this will bring! :-D
Greyman Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 if it works, it should at least reduce the spurious recognitions that VA gets with an open mic

Baldrick33 Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Thanks Greyman, I didn't know this existed and I have an RTX card. Just tried it using the Reverb in built mic and with fans on full blast and it worked a treat in a test with VAICOM. Will try with within DCS next but this looks a great find! Greyman Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Glad to be of assistance, but now closer to having to convince my other half that investing in a 3080, maybe ti, is an even better investment, when they drop. :) It might even be later this week, so i'll need to get to it.

Greyman Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Maybe try it with a hot mic and watch the VA log, whilst making various noises, such as heavy breathing, crying, bashing your head on the desk etc. You know the sorts of noises that playing DCS will often prompt :)
hornblower793 Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Have just had a quick play with it in Discord - I use a headset for both mike and sound so no real improvement in voice (it still detects breathing on the mike). I did also try turning up my speaker with rock music playing on it and the difference there was really noticeable. Using the standard mic option the sound bars in discord were registering quite a bit of noise. With the nVidia option running the sound bars were dead so it definitely made a difference there Windows 11 Home ¦ Z790 AORUS Elite AX motherboard ¦ i7-13700K ¦ 64GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5 memory @ 5600MHz ¦ Samsung 990 Pro 1TB SSD for OS, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD for DCS ¦ MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio 24GB ¦ Virpil WarBRD base with VFX grip, Thrustmaster A10c and F/A-18 grips ¦ VKB Gunfighter Mk4 and MCG Pro ¦ Thrustmaster Warthog Throttle ¦ VKB STECS Throttle ¦ Virpil TCS rotor base with Shark and AH-64D grips ¦ MFG Crosswinds ¦ Total Controls Multi-Function Button Box ¦ Pimax Crystal
Greyman Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Doesn't discord have it's own noise reduction system?
Baldrick33 Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Doesn't discord have it's own noise reduction system? The nvidia guide says to disable it and use the RTX voice one.
