TorwaK Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 USAF works on project which is called by "Blackswift". They design SR-72 that it will be able to fly with "5 Mach" speed at high altitude. The long and the short of it is that no any AA missile will be able to shoot SR-72 at this altitude with that speed. However with that speed plane can't chage to direction easly, so air route can be predictable. http://www.janes.com/news/defence/air/jdw/jdw080310_1_n.shtml 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Intel Core i7-6700K, @5GHz | Asus Maximus Hero VIII | 2 x eVGA GTX 970 SLI | Kingston Predator 16GB DDR4-3000Mhz | 2 x Samsung 850 PRO 240GB RAID-0 | AOC G2460PG G-SYNC LCD | OCULUS RIFT CV1 VR | THRUSTMASTER HOTAS WARTHOG | CH PRO PEDALS
VMFA117_Poko Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 Nice. What SR shortcut stands for? Stealth and recon?
Fjordmonkey Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 Nice. What SR shortcut stands for? Stealth and recon? Slippery Rascal :megalol: No idea, though :P It's an interesting concept, especially since there's so many ASAT-capable missile-systems coming online these days. We might see a shift back to the more "old-school" aircraft-recon (one man and an aircraft need not cost as much as designing, building and launching a satellite only to have it shot down within 24 hours). Regards Fjordmonkey Clustermunitions is just another way of saying that you don't like someone. I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.
Pilotasso Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 Wasnt thr SR-71 retired because hi res satelites rendered it obselete? We wont see the blackswift for at least another 20 years, I think it will be tacticaly obsolete by then as well. 1 .

I was going to ask "whats the point?" but you raise an interesting issue. How many current and future enemies of the US are capable of launching an ASAT? I think another interesting question is; who has SAMs that the US would spy on that would actually shoot at a spy plane invading their airspace? There are some interesting as well as scary conclusions you can take from that line of thought since there's a really big and obvious answer to that one...

ED Team Groove Posted March 12, 2008 ED Team Posted March 12, 2008 I think it might be cheaper to design and mantain such a plane which can have some derivates for civilian use than shooting recon satellites into the airspace. Especially if you need fast recce flying over a country which hasnt the latests SAMs which could engage such a plane. Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
