A new laptop for the Tomcat (please give me your opinion!)

Hallo, this is Tommy from Italy. Hope you're all doing fine in these hard times.

I'm pretty new to the DCS world, even if I have a pretty good experience with Flight Simulators and the Tomcat in general (not an actual aviator, unfortunately).

Right now I'm playing with 2012 (vintage style, baby!) laptop with an I7 3610 @ 2.30gHZ, 8 GB of RAM and a old but gold GeForce Gt 650M /2GB).

As you might imagine, I can play...but with all settings to minimum (except for shadows and cockpit set at Mid). And even with these low settings...I still get goosebumbps shooting the Cat from the default carrier (I got SC, but it runs like at 2FPS)

I am an architect and I need a laptop to move around so I must get a powerful one to both work and play. This ASUS I've found looks basically perfect for my job and other hobbies (music and video editing)

I would kindly like to know if you think it might also run DCS (basically F-14 + SC, mostly single player) with the level of details of your lovely videos and screenshots. I'm asking because looks like the GeForce 2080 is the best, and this would be equipped with the RTX2060. Unfortunately 2080 laptops cost around 4000+ Euros and they are out of my reach, these days.

And they are ugly! Architects like beautiful objects! :)

It's the 32 Gb RAM version.

When at home I would plug it into a FullHD 32' screen (lowering the output from 4K to 1080p)

Thanks a lot for your suggestions and happy landings!

Yes, this will definitely work fine. With VR maybe you'd have to set for some settings on some lower levels, but without VR you will definitely be good with it. :)

Thank you very very much, Mike.

I am not planning to play in VR, actually.

I just would like to play something like this, with TrackIT, rearview mirrors, SuperCarrier, reflections on water and so on...but with a enjoyable FPS:

Thanks!

Mirrors can be an issue even on the highest riggs, sometimes. But you should be able to play with them with this setup.

did you guys do something to mirrors recently? i rarely use them but when i tried them a week or 2 ago the resolution was ALOT better than before and the framerate didnt drop much at all

As a former Alienware18 owner I would suggest you do a thorough homework on this laptop before buying or if possible test DCS & F14 on it.

Go on other forums & ask, research, compere.

It's RTX2060M(Mobile) don't confuse with RTX2060D(desktop), same with CPU(M)so check benchmarks & game performance etc.

Is the cooling sufficient? that's very important for laptops & FPS heavy games, coz I promise you it will run on 100% while playing. The cooling fans has to be excellent at keeping it cool for hours.

15" is very small, consider 17". I would also consider a pure Gaming-laptop for that price, you can choose among plenty.

Good luck & let us know how it goes:thumbup:.

i7 8700k@4.7, 1080ti, DDR4 32GB, 2x SSD , HD 2TB, W10, ASUS 27", TrackIr5, TMWH, X-56, GProR.

First of all, thanks a lot for your kind suggestions.

At the end I bought the ASUS ZenBook I've seen and it delivers many features that I also need for my job.

I've quickly installed DCS and ran the F-14 from the SC. I set it up to high with the automatic presets and ran it at 1080.

Guys: smooth like silk! It was just a 5 mins cat shot and flight, as I got no time today.

It was really amazing! FPS was between 50 and 35.

With the proper optimization, it will be awesome!

Can't wait to become an active member of this forum!

thanks and happy landings!

my hp ran dcs decent

but to be honest Dcs is rreally a desktop game. dont listen to naysayers - you can beef a laptop up to you what you want. but itll never cool as much, or be as upgradeable, etc as a desktop. Id been using laptops for years and caved and spent 1800 on a really good desktop (imo) and DCS and flying games are a new world. I can see contacts FAR... etc etc

I wish I had the money for VR truly but oh well. cant have everything, good luck

edit Im glad its working!

Dont be afraid to dive into mp, if you want a RIO or pilot PM me. I can RIO just as well. until you did the multicrew with the F14 you havent experienced true multiplayer. Ive MPd since 90s airwarrior and duke nukem and by far my best MP experiences are multicrew F14.
