Passero Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I am wondering how I can get more ships that I can use in the mission editor? I'm new to DCS and only bought the P51 so I'm flying on the default map and have nothing else... If I buy the Channel map, will that come with additional ships I can use? For example I want to create a mission where I need to destroy/escort a ship but at the moment I only have a speedboat which isn't that compelling :)
Northstar98 Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 (edited) No map currently comes with extra assets (that might change with the Falklands Map though). For WWII situations you only really have the WWII assets pack, which includes an LST Mk.2, a Higgins LCVP, the USS Samuel Chase (Arthur Middleton-class attack transport), an S-100 Schnellboot/E-boat and finally, a late-war Type VIIC U-boat. The ships involved with amphibious warfare can't actually be utilised as such at the moment, it's impossible to beach the LST without using static objects, and the only way to emulate disembarking of troops and vehicles is to use a workaround using triggers. Though the Higgins LCVP and LST are at least animated for it, just not implemented in DCS. Unfortunately, these are all that seems planned at the moment, you'll probably need to go through the user made mods, which can be found on the DCS main website -> Downloads -> User Files and see what you can find (you'll probably be able to search for them). In general though ships and in fact the naval environment as a whole is something DCS leaves a lot to be desired (apart from carrier operations and graphics quality for a select few assets). I won't get into it here though... Passero Posted September 8, 2020 Author Posted September 8, 2020 oh ok thanks. I do notice that DCS comes with some option when it comes to modern ships but from around the WWII era, there isn't much choice... There are a few carriers and some options for when you want ships with weapons but they don't suit for a WWII type mission. Oh well... Good thing is that at least I know it's lacking so I won't get into navel missions that deep and focus on land troop missions instead.
Northstar98 Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 oh ok thanks. I do notice that DCS comes with some option when it comes to modern ships but from around the WWII era, there isn't much choice... I mean, there is the asset pack (I'd recommend it anyway for WWII stuff, though maybe wait for a sale?). But even so, it still isn't a whole lot, and there aren't any real surface combatants apart from the E-Boat... Oh well... Good thing is that at least I know it's lacking so I won't get into navel missions that deep and focus on land troop missions instead. It's something that might get improved, but apart from US carrier operations and graphics (on a very select few) there's a lot lacking - which is a shame because I enjoy naval operations, but DCS leaves a bit too much to be desired to really make it worthwhile...
