New 3070 or 3080?

Recommended Posts

anyone using the RTX3070 or 3080? I'm looking to go from 1080p to 4k. right now i have just a 40" 1080 tv, but i want to upgrade. I was wondering if anyone has ran DCS in 4k on any of the new Nvidia cards. I've seen tons of videos on benchmarks but I'm not sure how any of the typical bench mark games compare to DCS.  I was thinking i could stick with the 3070 and still be relatively future proof on DCS (it's really all I play) or if I should just cough up the extra hundred or more bucks for the 3080. Currently I'm running a 1550 ti, I know any of the new cards would be leaps ahead of where I'm at now.

Check this out for various benchmarks (of course no DCS).  For 4K, I think the 3080 will be more future proof but it's really a matter of how much you're willing to spend.  On the other hand, future proof might not mean much when next gen tech such as DLSS and raytracing are relatively immature.  Newer gen GPUs in a year or two will definitely be more powerful and more efficient in those areas.  For DCS only, I think 3070 is good enough.

Make sure your CPU has the power to stop you bottle necking as well, otherwise the 3x series of cards is gonna be wasted, same with your Ram, Ram is so cheap these days less than 32gb seems a waste, running 64gb here with a 5ghz 9700k CPU and a 2080ti OC Extreme and the game runs lovely in highest detail, still only just copes with the same detail in VR tho 😄

Actually several Youtuber's make reviews using FS 2020, that may give an idea about DCS.

Just Fly It (Maksim Savelev) did a video with 3090 using DCS and IL-2:GB (in VR).

Bottlenecking is 'mostly' nonsense at 1440p and higher.  At 4K, the CPU is almost meaningless. Hardware Unboxed just answered this for the umpeenth time in a recent video:

Also, check out the scaling benchmarks:

This one's not the most up-to-date and only goes to 1440p, but the differences at 4K are even smaller.  There are many scaling benchmarks out there that show this.  TL:DR, as long as you have the performance of a 3600, you're good.  Now, DCS is an old, unoptimized beast that does however like high clock frequency.  More cores are a complete waste.  It's all about clock speed and IPC.  Personally, if you're even considering a 3070/3080, I'd wait until the Ti models come out.  You can't get any of these cards right now anyways. Best bang for your buck RIGHT NOW is the 3060ti, if you can actually get it close to MSRP, but I wouldn't get that if you're thinking 4K.

My 3080 just arrived. I run a 4096x2160@60hz main screen + a 1920x1080 secondary screen with two MFDs. R5 3600 and 32gb RAM. Game runs from an nvme drive (660p)

I've only had time to do some free flying with the A4 over Dubai and the F-16 free flight over Syria with the settings generally maxed out.  Haven't run any benchmarks or anything but ... Well I'm comparing it to the rx480 I had previously but its just wow.

Happy to test some scenarios or run some benchmarks if you have anything specific in mind (within reason of course!). I've got the f-14/16/18, viggen, m2000, f-5e, a-4, a-10c (& II) and FC3. All of the terrains except the french ones.

Let me know.

  • 3 months later...

Just got my hands on a 3060ti, What a difference! and I upgrades to a 1440x3440 144 MHz ultra wide. I never realized all the detail i was missing in game! I have all the settings cranked up and its smooth as butter! I also added 32gb of ram.
