rkk01 Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Tempted by VR... seems perfect match for flights sims / DCS, but have a few questions. first off - how do you control your aircraft...?! ie presumably you are fully dependent on the virtual cockpit and HOTAS setup??? Not sure how this would work for me at the mo as I use a combo of HOTAS, mouse / virtual cockpit and keyboard. Presumably mouse and keyboard are both out as you won’t be able to see them...! My HOTAS kit is a TM Cougar - mostly works, but frustratingly the track ball / cursor works in TM setup software, but not in DCS secondly - what VR kit is popular / works well in DCS, and what level of GPU is required to drive it??? thanks, rkk01

Qiou87 Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 Considering GPUs, I have a smooth experience using Rift S with a RTX2070 SUPER (1.4x supersampling). I guess for the high-end headsets (Index, Reverb G2) you need to step up to the high-end new GPUs as well (RX6800XT, RTX 3080). Same as you OP, I had doubts when switching to VR about using the mouse. The trick is to find the comfortable position for you to grab the mouse next to your stick, it is very easy to interact with the cockpit this way. There are more immersive ways once you are sure to stick with VR flying, but to start there is nothing wrong with the mouse. I use the keyboard for some startup procedure steps only, things I only need once per flight, the rest is on the HOTAS. Lurker Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 It all depends. But I mostly use the same setup as I did before VR. I tried different things, but basically with a decent HOTAS setup and most of the stuff bound to HOTAS it works well, I've even taught myself to use keyboard binds blind and mouse use is surprisingly natural. As for performance, well that is kind of a mixed bag. It all comes down to what your expectations are. If you expect DCS to look and run as great in VR as it does in 2d then unfortunately this will not meet your expectations, even with some of the best rigs. I have a decent PC an i5-9600k overclocked to 4.8 Ghz (won't go higher, bad luck with silicon I guess), 32GB Ram, 1 TB M2SSD, and a brand new spanking RTX3090 and Im still trying to configure it for a judder free experience. Unfortunately the engine that DCS uses is simply not well optimized for VR and probably won't be for a long time. It is very playable and Im still tinkering with settings to make it a smooth judder free experience.
