harf4ng Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Hi, I need advice about the quest 2 with an old graphic card. I have a good computer but with just a GTX 970 video card. Before I used an HTC Vive. Of course in DCS to have a smooth experience I had to lower the graphics to the minimum. My goal is to buy one of the new graphic cards, either AMD or NVIDIA, but they are not available, so I am waiting. Now, I bought a Quest 2. As with this headset I thought I could use it as a standalone headset while I wait to have a new graphic card. And so yesterday I wanted to try it in DCS. Of course with the same settings than the Vive, DCS was unplayable. Laggy as hell. Normal because the resolution is a lot higher. But then I wanted to try it anyway so I lowered the pixel density in DCS to 0.6. It seemed then smooth enough. I played then a multiplayer DCS helicopter mission, everything was fine at start when I was near the airfield, but as soon as I went near more complex terrain it started to be laggy as hell as well. BUT it was also laggy then when I wan above the sea, and even when I was back to original airfield. Why? I mean, it was smooth when I left the airfield, why did it start to be laggy again when I came back to same airfield? Any way to have it playable with the Quest 2? I do not mind lowering graphics as low as I can while waiting for the new graphic card, I just want it to be playable. I would like to avoid having to take back my HTC Vive just for DCS. Moreover the graphics on the quest 2 were worse at 0.6 pixel density than with the Vive at 1.0, but strangely enough they were more readable. Like the ADF numbers. I was unable to read them with the Vive, but they were readable with the Quest 2. Any help appreciated ^^ Thanks Favorite modules : Huey, F-86F, F14 and P-51D Quest 2, RTX 3080, i7 10700K, 16 Gb of RAM, Pro Flight Trainer PUMA helicopter setup, Warthog HOTAS with two force sensitive stick, custom cockpit and a GS-Cobra dynamic seat.
Sonomaa Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 (edited) I tried my quest 2 on my PC with a GTX970, works but not as smooth as my laptop with a 1070. So on the PC I use a webcam with viewtracker and I use the Quest 2 on the laptop. Can't wait til I can upgrade the video card I run everything on low with a couple of exceptions. Textures on High, resolution at 1080 ( only makes a difference on your monitor not VR), shadows on low flat, trees at about 40% and map preload maxed (should have an ssd or better yet nvme m.2) and still have pixel density at 1.0 Edited December 20, 2020 by Sonomaa
harf4ng Posted December 20, 2020 Author Posted December 20, 2020 The settings you talked about was in VR? I have setup everything on low except terrain texture and cockpit texture, pixel density to 0.6 and this is very laggy ^^ And I can't imagine going back to a 2D screen. I prefer not flying at all. Or if I do not manage to have the quest 2 running smooth with DCS I'll go back to my vive until I can have a better graphic card. What I don't unerstand is it wasn't that laggy at first, it became laggy later on, and stays laggy even when I was back to the original airfield... Uxi Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 I was using my 970 FTW and had PD at 0.9 to 1.0 and most settings mid/low and it was playable. Everything is on high now with 2070 though still planning to upgrade to 3080 or maybe 3090 in the next year (deliberately underspeced since I got tired of waiting for Ampere last November and plan to reuse 2070 for a RIO/wingman build this year Specs & Wishlist: Core i9 9900k 5.0Ghz, Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero, 64GB G.Skill Trident 3600, Asus RoG Strix 3090 OC, 2TB x Samsung Evo 970 M.2 boot. I guess you do not have your graphical settings anymore when you had your 970? But what headset did you have when you had your 970? harf4ng Posted December 31, 2020 Author Posted December 31, 2020 So anybody has an idea why the game is playable with my HTC Vive with pixel density at 1.0 (though most graphical settings at low), and unplayable because of a lot of stuttering and lag with my Oculus Quest 2 even with pixel density at 0.5? And so what can I do to make it playable with my quest 2? VirusAM Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 So this is why even with a bad graphic quality I can have an unplayable experience? It could be.I need more testing, but with the Index (with an higher rendering resolution via supersampling) I get better performances. With the quest 2 my system performances are not bad, but I have big issues when moving my head or with fast movements (stutter, double images)...and that could be caused by the encoding part or by some bug of the oculus software.
