LeCuvier Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 (edited) I cannot make the CBU-103 work. For a test I created a mission that uses CBU-97, CBU-103 and CBU-105. For all 3 I set Min. Altitude to 10,000 and HOF to 1,500. Launch altitude is about 16,000 ft. The CBU-97 and CBU-105 tend to hit between 2 to 3 out of 4 grouped targets. Also I can see the bomblets coming down. The CBU-103 doesn't hit anything, and I cannot see the bomblets coming down There is only a breif fireworks around a rather narrow zone where something seems to come down. Does the CBU-103 require different parameters? Edit: I added the CBU-87 to the mission and it behaves just like the CBU-103: no hits at all. SJBMX Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 Your HOF seems way too high, but, regardless, the 87 and 103 are very ineffective in DCS (even against infantry and unarmored trucks) due to the damage modeling.
Tobur Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 I second that, don't bother with this types of cluster bombs. For unarmored targets I went back using good old Mk82s....
Tippis Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 (edited) As others have said, soft-target cluster bombs are just wholly ineffective, especially against soft targets such as infantry. That said, there are occasional issues with how HoF and spin functions don't quite generate the kind of spread you'd expect. It can often bloom out and become even more ineffective, which really shouldn't be possible, but trying to tightening it up will at times just… not. At best, cluster bombs may kill two or three trucks or jeeps sitting right next to each other if you manage to nail them right on the head and just happen to catch a few more by the simple shotgun-blast effect of it all. But as Tobur points out, if you can get that level of precision in your bombs, just bring Mk82s, GBU-12s or JDAMs instead — you can carry more and they'll be just as, and often more, effective. While splash damage is horribly low and has far too little effect in DCS, it is still good enough to beat what CEM clusters can manage. Alternatively, if you really need to kill a lot of infantry at once, bring some anti-tank cluster bombs — CBU-105s in the A-10, or JSOW-Bs or GB-6-SFWs in other aircraft. Either way, it's not really a 103 issue, as such, as it is just CEM being less lethal than tennis balls in general. Edited December 26, 2020 by Tippis ❧ ❧ Inside you are two wolves. LeCuvier Posted December 28, 2020 Author Posted December 28, 2020 Thanks guys, I will no bother with using these bombs until I hear that they've been improved.
