Rabies Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 Today I joined an Australian server and flew around in a KA-50, I currently had no mic so was writing messages. I wish to thank a guy for being so helpful and giving me some direction to recent enemy sightings, I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten your call sign. I have a few questions that couldn’t really be answered fully by the message system within the game. 1) once in the cockpit I was unable to activate the drop down menu for available missions. I was using the \ key but nothing. Is this menu available in all servers? If it’s not, how do you know where to go? 2) the guy that was helping said to join their discord and he would talk me through everything. How do you open another window, whilst your sitting in the cockpit? Obviously this needs to be done to enter the discord address. 3) once I was airborne, I was unable to access the drop down radio menu when I pressed the programmed button on my joystick. Is this deactivated ? it was enjoyable to be flying around, not knowing what lay beyond the next hill or in the next valley. It would be more enjoyable if I had a mic, which has now been ordered lol.
flask Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 (edited) Hi Sorry you feel you had a somewhat frustrated time when flying multiplayer, if you could not access the message system with your J/stick, first try the #~ button or in the air try R/alt and #~( might be R/ctr and #~ I forget) the coms menu is not great for communicating battle info etc , but there are other ways the guys who run the servers can do this but again its very time intensive and takes a great understanding of the under the hood DCS commands/ programming for them to do this, In time DCS will eventually update all the coms so hang in there, just keep joining, I see that someone was trying to help, this was not a one off thing, most DCS flyers will go out of there way to help, but do help by reading the the briefs on the servers, its very frustrating to see some one asking for the Stennis INS number when its all posted in the brief, also most times there is a map of engagement areas with navigation points, finally flying the KA in battle ?, remember you have a big radar signature so keep low and use terrain, also the opp fighters like nothing better than to snack on a 50 for pre lunch and will go out of there way to hunt you down, last: carry a big set of brass ball and go for it. Good luck Edited January 24, 2021 by flask
Rabies Posted January 24, 2021 Author Posted January 24, 2021 Thanks for the reply Flask, I’ll give those key suggestions a try. I love sneaking around in the KA-50 in the Syria map. Such an awesome map for helo’s. I fly so low that I have grass stains on the underside of the aircraft lol
QuiGon Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 (edited) 1) A comms menu that lists available missions is something that only specific servers use. 2) On Windows computers you can use Alt + TAB to switch between windows. I recommend to open Discord before you launch DCS, so you can switch back and forth between Discord and DCS using Alt + TAb while flying. 3) I guess you have "Easy Communications" activated when flying singleplayer. On many multiplayer servers this setting is deactivated, meaning you have to use the actual radio switches in your cockpit. In the Ka-50 that button is located on the collective and you need to map it to your joystick/throttle to be able to use it. It's called "SPU-9 PTT" in the controls list. With Easy Comms deactivated the / key only works on the ground in order to simulate shouting to the ground crew or using the pluged in intercom of the ground crew. When airborne you need to use the actual radio key. flask Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 If I see you ( I do not fly multiplayer with my DCS members name) on a server I will join you, if that's alright, the 50 is my Favourite and its best to fly in groups.
